Auburn Baseball Making NCAA Regional is Special

The Auburn baseball team learned their post season destination Monday. The Tigers will be traveling to a familiar place. Out of the 20 NCAA Regional appearances, nine have been played at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida and the Tigers will be back there Friday.

Auburn (35-24) has been awarded the No.3 seed in the Regional and will face the No. 2 seed, Central Florida (40-20) 11 A.M. CT in the opening game of the regional. No. 1 seed Florida State will take on No. 4 Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m.

Although the Tigers will be playing at a familiar place, it will nevertheless be a tough tournament. All three of the other teams are the respective champions of their conferences. Central Florida is the Central American Athletic Conference regular-season champion, Tenn. Tech is the Ohio Valley Conference regular-season and tournament champion, and Florida State is the ACC Tournament champion.

Coach Butch Thompson said, “From my 15 years in the Southeastern Conference, I believe this is one of the toughest fields to make that I can remember. There’s no doubt that making this field is special.” And after injuries to key players including ace Casey Mize almost derailed the Tigers’ season … this certainly has to be special.

Thompson is no stranger to post season play but this will be the first time he will be taking a team as a head coach. As an assistant he has helped take 15 teams to postseason appearances, including seven trips to the College World Series.

Here’s to hoping Butch takes the Tigers all the way to the CWS!
