Four Auburn Players Not Returning

Auburn will be down four on its depth chart heading into spring practice. Gus Malzahn announced the departures of offensive lineman Deon Mix and linebacker Cameron Toney, as the two will be graduating and not returning to the field for Auburn. Defensive back Markell Boston and running back Stephen Davis Jr. were removed from the roster.

Mix is expected to continue his football career at another school where he’ll be eligible immediately, while Cameron Toney is still evaluating his options.

I would say this about those two young men,” Malzahn said. “They were a part of my first signing class as head coach. They are wonderful young men, they’ve done a great job here at Auburn. They have great families and they will be very successful in life and we will miss both of those guys.”

Markell Boston and Stephen Davis Jr., on the other hand, appear to have been kicked off the team based on the short responses given by Coach Malzahn.

“He didn’t meet out standards, so he’s no longer with us because of that,” Malzahn said in response to a question about Boston’s dismissal.

Davis, the son of former Auburn running back Stephen Davis, is “no longer with us,” according to Malzahn.

A late addition to the 2016 signing class, Davis showed great potential, as he was rated the No. 20 athlete out of high school in 247Sports’ player rankings. He was redshirted for the 2016 season.

Auburn held its first spring practice on Tuesday afternoon.
