Three Star Tight End John Samuel Shenker Commits to Auburn

Auburn adds commitment #20 for 2017 in the position where the Tigers have the most need for improved depth.

If you want to know how Chip Lindsey's offensive style may differ from the style Auburn has used over the last few years, then look no further than today's commitment of 3* tight end John Samuel Shenker of Colquitt County, GA.

If you're wondering why Auburn suddenly got in on the recruitment of Shenker - whose only other P5 offer was Wake Forest and was likely Georgia Southern-bound before Auburn offered - look no further than Shenker's high school head coach. That would be one Rush Probst. Probst has a connection with Auburn OC Chip Lindsey, and the Tigers offered Shenker shortly after Lindsey was hired.

Shenker, at 6'3, 245 lbs, isn't the tallest of tight ends. He somewhat fits in as the tweener of WR/Tight end. I don't know enough about him to know whether this is a reach or if he may be a diamond in the rough, but we know his high school coach thinks he's talented. Auburn has the depth in most every position not to reach, but tight end is definitely the spot where Auburn needs bodies. There's also the manner in which Lindsey uses his H-Back/TE position that means the Tigers need more traditional TE type players than the fullbacks.

HIGHLIGHTS

THE CLASS

Auburn dropped a bit in the rankings when Octavius Matthews decommitted the other day. Shenker doesn't move the Tigers back up to their previous position, but he does help. He puts the Tigers back at 20 commitments for the season as we're approaching Signing Day. The Tigers are 10th in the nation and 5th in the SEC. The teams ahead of Auburn have more commits, though. In some cases (Alabama and Texas A&M) those schools have 5 or more commits than Auburn.

Will Shenker be the last tight end of the 2017 class? Perhaps. I would say probably, but you never know. Auburn only has two scholarship tight ends on the team heading into spring, so depth is very necessary. We'll find out soon enough, as National Signing Day is this Wednesday.
