Coach Malzahn adds Greg Brown to his coaching staff

A new coach has been added to the Auburn Tigers football program.  Just weeks after secondary coach Wesley McGriff left to be Defensive Coordinator at Ole Miss, Gus Malzahn announced today that Missouri Tigers secondary coach has accepted the job to join Steele’s defensive coaching team. This isn’t the first time Coach Brown has teamed up with Coach Kevin Steele. Both men were on the 2013 Alabama coaching staff under Nick Saban.

Brown has been in the business for over 35 years with much of that being on the NFL side, but has made stops coaching at Louisville (2014-15) and Alabama (2013) and served as defensive coordinator at Colorado (2012)

“I’m extremely excited to come to Auburn and have the opportunity to work for Gus Malzahn and on the defensive side of the ball with Kevin Steele. Auburn has a great football tradition built on hard work and toughness. I can’t wait to get to Auburn to help continue to build upon that success.”

While coaching for the Missouri Tigers, Brown helped coach a defense that tied for the SEC lead in interceptions (15) during the regular season, though it allowed 246.8 passing yards per game to rank 86th nationally.  He will be taking over an Auburn Tigers passing defense that ranked 67th in pass defense (229.2 yards per game), 22nd in pass efficiency defense (116.83) and tied for fifth in passes defended (80).

Coach Malzahn believes Brown will bring great experience to the table for the young defensive. “I’m excited to welcome Greg Brown, who is one of the best defensive backs coach in all of football to our staff at Auburn,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said in a statement. “Greg has coached three Thorpe Award winners and has a strong proven track record of developing players at both the college and professional level.”

As far as recruiting, only time will tell what Coach Brown will be able to do out on the road and who he can bring in. Rudy Ford and Joshua Holsey are gone now and will need to be replaced. Carlton Davis and safeties Tray Matthews and Stephen Roberts will be there ready to help fill in the gaps as well as many other up and coming young men ready to prove to Coach Brown they can be called on to work in his defense.

Welcome to the Auburn family, Coach Brown, and War Eagle!
