The Tigers hit the court up in the northeast again for a huge out-of-conference match-up against the Sooners.
It’s time for Auburn to play Oklahoma! No, we’re not a week and a half early on the Sugar Bowl, the Tigers and Sooners are playing on the hardwood in the Hall of Fame Classic in Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, CT.
Yes, that’s a strange place for the Tigers to play, but it’s another one of those marquee type games and against a marquee team. Just last season the Sooners were a Final Four team. The season hasn’t started quite as well for Oklahoma this year, as they’re currently sitting at a 6-4 record. Here’s what Son of Crow had to say about the game in This Week in Auburn Hoops:
Auburn plays TONIGHT against the Oklahoma Sooners at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. On paper this is a very evenly matched game, but I think Auburn has the edge in pure talent. OU has a senior guard named Jordan Woodard leading it in scoring, which has been a bugaboo for Auburn in the past. Look for TJ Lang and Bryce Brown to step up on defense against him.
I certainly hope he’s correct! That’s assuming Bryce Brown plays, of course. We know he and Horace Spencer are no longer suspended, but we don’t know that they’ll play tonight. I would assume they will, though.
Oklahoma’s losses are not to pushovers, so it’s hard to read into those. They’ve lost to Memphis, Wichita State, #17 Wisconsin, and Northern Iowa. The Sooners are still a very good basketball team and will present a very tough test to the Tigers.
The Sooners spread the wealth in points with four players at or near the double-digit mark per game. They also rebound much better than Auburn. They’re tied for 67th in the nation, whereas Auburn is near the very bottom of the country in rebounds.
Auburn also has four players at or near double-digits per game, but that’s because Austin Wiley only has one game under his belt and he had 9 points in that game. The other three are the same that have been at the top all season long: Purifoy, Heron, and Harper.
It should be a fun game and is another chance for the Tigers to try to show out in prime time in a marquee game. Hopefully, this one goes a bit better than last week’s game against Boston College.
