One of the SEC’s most intense rivalries will be renewed this Saturday in what some have referred to over the years as the “Tiger Bowl.” Yes, it’s LSU week on the Plains.
Over the years the series has been an intense one, often with a championship on the line for at least one of the participants.
Many of those games are remembered by special names like the one point ’88 “earthquake game” in Baton Rouge that knocked Auburn out of playing for the national championship and the “Extra Point game” in 2004 when LSU missed an early PAT and Auburn’s John Vaughn made his lone PAT to give Auburn a 10-9 lead with 1:14 to go in the fourth quarter. The win propelled the Tigers to a 13-0 finish and an eventual SEC Championship.
Twenty three of the 50 games played between the two schools have been decided by a touchdown or less, with LSU owning a 28-21-1 edge. However, there have also been blowouts like Auburn’s 41-7 drubbing of the Purple Tigers in 2014 and last year’s 45-21 embarrassment by LSU.
Adding to this year’s atmosphere will be SEC Nation’s traveling roadshow, the SEC Network’s pregame show will be broadcasting from Auburn. Expect the talking heads to be spewing diatribes on the implications this game may have on the future of Gus Mazahn and Les Miles.
All that speculation aside, both teams need to play better than they have thus far. Both have had good and bad moments in their first three games.
Auburn (1-2) opens the week as an 3.5 point underdog to LSU (2-1), yet many are wringing their hands after Auburn’s loss to Texas A&M. Lost in the disappointment of that game is the fact the Tigers had more time of possession, more rushing yards, more first downs, a better third down conversion rate, and ran 89 plays to A&M’s 77. So don’t count the Orange and Blue out just yet.
Admittedly Auburn has some issues, especially along the offensive line. However, these Tigers are talented enough to play with the No.18 Bengals. Auburn has a chance if they execute and play with some consistency. And as an optimist, I’m hoping the Auburn crowd will make a difference.
You can bet the house will be rocking this Saturday night and I can’t wait to be there. It’s payback time. It’s time for some revenge for last year’s loss in Baton Rouge. And it’s time for all Auburn fans to get their game faces on, because … It’s LSU Week on the Plains!
Let’s go Tigers, Beat LSU!
