The Quarterback Race Goes On.

Fall Camp 4

War Eagle, everybody! Fall camp continues, and we’ll soon be coming up on opening game week. Auburn will take on the second-ranked Clemson Tigers, in Jordan Hare Stadium, in a nationally televised tilt. I don’t know about everyone else, but each day that goes by at this point, with no named starter at quarterback, makes me more edgy and nervous. Hopefully, they know by now who the man is going to be. It is past time to begin installing a game plan for Clemson.

Offensively, the Tigers should be in pretty good shape for whomever wins the starting quarterback job. By all accounts, dropped balls are down, and confidence is up in the receiver corps. The newcomers such as Eli Stove and Nate Craig-Myers are pushing the veterans hard, and competition there is fierce. The backfield seems set with Chandler Cox taking most H-back snaps, and a trio of Kamryn Pettway, Kerryon Johnson and Malik Miller carrying the ball.

Much of the talk this fall is of defensive expectations. With up to 10 talented linemen in the playing rotation, a fierce defense is expected to emerge. Looking back over the past decade at Auburn, the bar is set pretty low. Since Tommy Tuberville resigned back in 2008, Auburn has not finished better than 60th in the nation in total defense since. The 2010 team was the best of the bunch, at 60th. Last year’s unit finished 71st, 13th in the SEC. Improvement is needed, this season.

I’d say the biggest question mark on the defense would be at cornerback. Jamel Dean separated himself from the pack this past spring, and looked ready to start opposite Carlton Davis. Now, it’s a race. Some folks have sophomore Javaris Davis atop the depth chart. Davis is reputed to be the fastest player on the Auburn roster. Others have senior Joshua Holsey in that spot. True freshman John Broussard, Jr. enrolled early, and went through spring drills. It is said that he is getting a ton of reps with the ones, also.

There are players still fighting for position in the linebacker corps this week. It’s pretty much assumed that Tre’ Williams will be a lock to start. The other spot in Auburn’s typical 4-2-5 look is still up for grabs. Deshaun Davis was the leader for this spot, but he’s being pushed by Illinois transfer T. J. Neal. When Auburn plays teams with traditional pro-style attacks, Cameron Toney looks to be the guy to come in and be a strong side linebacker. Darrell Williams is another guy who will likely see a lot of playing time.
