“This is a tremendous day for the Auburn Family and for all sports fans across the country who love the fall and football,” said Ron Booth, executive director of facility operations at Auburn University. Booth made the statement in a University news release today announcing the schools’s intent to reinstate the fan’s rolling the oak tress at Toomer’s Corner.
Auburn stopped the tradition in 2013 after the original oak trees were poisoned in 2011 by a fan of an opposing fan base (whose name is not worthy of printing here). All efforts to save the 100 year old live oaks failed and the beloved icons had to be taken down. They were replaced in 2015 with two new tress.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience during the past few years,” Booth said. “This is a return to one of the greatest traditions in college athletics. We ask that you roll the trees without crossing the fences and not to roll the descendant oaks in Samford Park.
The announcement means that for the first time in three years fans will be able to continue the time honored tradition this football season. Here’s to hoping the new Toomer’s Oaks will receive their first rolling September 3rd after the opening game against Clemson.
