Is It Really Time for SEC Media Days?

gus malzahn media daysCan it really be SEC Media Days? If it feels like the annual event comes earlier each year, it’s because it does. Traditionally an indicator that the season is just around the corner, the SEC production now happens nearly a month before the first fall practice.

The SEC seems determined to keep their media gathering first in the nation, even if it means starting just two weeks after college baseball ends. But who’s complaining? Even though we know it’s some ways off, just seeing those coaches and players arrive in Birmingham puts a little bounce in your step.

Gus Malzahn will be joined by Carl Lawson, Montravius Adams and Marcus Davis to kick things off in Hoover at 1:30 CT. They will be followed by Florida and Vanderbilt. The SEC Network will have wall-to-wall coverage…

A year ago, Auburn was the media darling heading into SEC Media Days. What a difference a year makes for Gus Malzahn. Even during the high expectations of last summer, things never felt right. This season, something tells me Auburn will surprise. Isn’t that always the case?…

Speaking of Lawson and Adams, don’t be surprised to see the defense exceed expectations this year. Word around campus is this unit has really gelled during off-season workouts…

Kudos to Auburn for stepping to the plate and scheduling Penn St. for a home-and-home series. In an era where neutral site games have become the norm, having a chance to travel to Happy Valley is a treat for not only the players, but the fans…

You could hear the collective yawns when Southern Miss was announced as a future opponent. There’s no question it’s a step up from Alabama A&M, but it hardly makes me want to rush out and renew my tickets.

I still don’t understand why Auburn and Georgia Tech can’t work out something semi-long-term. It’s almost criminal that two programs with such a long history and 90 miles of interstate between them can’t make it work…

Will Auburn ever move to the SEC East? It’s looking slim. While publicly school and conference officials remain nearly non-committal, there are some on both sides who secretly hope it will happen. An eventual nine-game conference schedule may one day right the ship.

Nothing against LSU or Ole Miss, but it still seems strange, even after all these years, to not play Tennessee and Florida annually. Personally, I could do without another trip to Baton Rouge or Oxford and it has nothing to do with football…

Nobody expects Jeremy Johnson to claim the starting quarterback job, but you can’t argue with the young man’s work ethic. Players say he’s been the most vocal during summer workouts, taking time to encourage the new players and making sure the team stays on track away from the coaches.

He may not be what Auburn needs behind center, but they don’t make a finer human than this guy. Here’s hoping he shocks everyone.

Until next time…
