Friday Ramblings From The Plains (7-22-16 edition)

Thursday night, the Chicago White Sox recognized one of their fan’s favorite players when they introduced the sell of Bo Jackson Bobbleheads at U.S. Cellur Stadium.

It doesn’t seem like it, but it’s been three decades since the former Auburn great and Heisman Trophy winner chose baseball over football. The bobbleheads appropriately are a depiction of the two-sport legend’s famous breaking of the bat over his knee.

The figurines, are priced at $35 with proceeds going toward the support of White Sox Charities and will be sold at home games while supply last. If you would like to buy one and can’t afford a plane tickets to the windy city, they can be purchase online.

Another Auburn Heisman winner received an honor yesterday when the NFL Network named Cam Newton the league’s No.1 Player. The 2015 NFL MVP ranking was based on votes by NFL players. Newton said he was humbled by the honor. “With me being so much of a fan of so many guys in this league,” said Cam. “For them to vote me number one, it means a lot.” Tom Brady and J.J. Watt finished two and three behind Cam.

Former Auburn All-American golfer Michael Johnson finished third in his PGA debut at the Barbasol Championship Sunday with a 6-under 65 final round at Grand National. He finished just one stroke behind playoff contenders Aaron Baddeley and Si Woo Kim.

The top-10 finish earned Johnson a $248,000 payday. But perhaps just as important, the finish qualified him to play at the next PGA Tour event when the pro’s tee off in the RBC Canadian Open at the Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario.

After denying plans to expand the last couple of years and after losing Texas A&M, Missouri, Nebraska, and Colorado it looks like the Big 12 is going to get on the bandwagon. The league said Tuesday that Auburn’s 2015 bowl opponent Memphis State is under consideration to join the Big12.

Auburn fall football practice will begin Aug. 3 exactly one month from the Tigers’ season opener against. Though the majority of players have been working out this summer, the official reporting date is Aug. 2.

Speaking of fall camp. Remember last week at SEC Media Days when Gus Malzahn said, “That four players arrested in the off season, “Made a mistake, we punished them and they won’t miss any time. That’s behind us?”

Turns out it’s not behind us just yet. Byron Cowart, Carlton Davis, Ryan Davis and Jeremiah Dinson were to appear in court today to face charges for marijuana possession. However, their court date was rescheduled this week to be heard Sept.1 at 1 p.m. The new date could serve as a distraction as it comes on the last day of fall camp and just two days before Auburn plays Clemson on September 3rd.

p-marloncharacterDefensive Coordinator Kevin Steele got some good news on Thursday. Four-star safety Marlon Character has completed admission requirements including a summer course, making him eligible this season. Back in November Character flipped his commitment from South Carolina to the Tigers and is expected to report to Auburn July 31 in time to begin fall camp.

Rod Bramblett’s long awaited book chronicling his career inside Auburn athletics is scheduled to hit bookstores this week. Bramblett was encouraged by many friends and family members to record his Auburn reflections after his famous call of the historic. “Kick Six” play in the 2013 Iron Bowl.

The title of the book, “Touchdown Auburn: Carrying on the Tradition of the Auburn Tigers,” is a tribute to another great Auburn radio man, the late great Jim Fyfe. It should be a great collection to add to any Tiger fans’ library and can be preordered on Amazon.

Until next time …
