Midweek Ramblings From The Plains (6-15-16 edition)

The time between the end of college baseball and the beginning of SEC Media days is typically the slowest time for the college sports news cycle. However, a bit of interesting news came out Sunday from the league’s sports information directors. The SID’s gave their annual prediction on how each football team will finish at the 2016 football season.

Auburn was picked in a tie with Arkansas for fourth place in the West behind Ole Miss, LSU, and that team from west Alabama. Hopefully the Tigers will do much better than that. But if there is one game this writer wants to win (behind UGa and Bama) it’s the one against Bilema’s Hogs.

The football team received some good news yesterday that quarterback Woody Barrett will be able to enroll in summer school. While most don’t expect him to start this fall, he could move up the depth chart by the end of the season.

Auburn will be playing Arkansas State September 10th at 6:3o CT but fans may want to set their VCR’s to ESPN that night to view the LSU-Jacksonville State game afterwards. Former Tiger running back Roc Thomas will most probably be the featured back for JSU. While we wish him well, it will be weird to see the former Tiger in a Gamecock uniform.

This year marked the 42nd consecutive year that Auburn baseball has had a player selected in the MLB Draft. Six Tigers were selected: All American Anfernee Grier ( Arizona) Joshua Palacios (Toronto), Niko Buentello (Detroit), Justin Camp (Kansas City), and pitchers, Ben Braymer (Washington Nationals), and Keegan Thompson (Detroit).

Speaking of baseball, it was good to see the 2010 SEC Player of the Year, Hunter Morris returning from the pro’s to help his former team. Morris will be a student assistant coach, while completing his degree.

The Mike Hubbard conviction has spurred a group to petition the city of Auburn to rename the Mike Hubbard Boulevard to Cam Newton Run. As of Tuesday afternoon, reports say the petition had more than 400 signatures. Should the petitioners be successful plenty of visitors will see the new sign as the road runs off of Bent Creek Rd at Exit 57 and into the Auburn Airport.

Probably the most significant news from around the SEC had to be Jeremy Foley’s announcement Monday that he plans to retire this fall as Athletic Director at the University of Florida. There may not be a more successful AD in the country. In his tenure in Gainesville, the Gators have won 27 national championships, including three football and two basketball championships. In addition Florida has won the league’s All Sports Trophy in 24 of his 25 years.

Without a doubt, Foley set the standard for athletic directors in the SEC. If winning is the measure of a successful AD, Foley has few peers. It will be interesting to see who is tagged to replace him.

Until next time.
