A friend of mine joked Saturday night that Auburn should put all its money into softball and let the football team play exhibition matches before the start of games. Auburn folks needed Saturday night’s come from behind victory over Georgia.
We’d forgotten how good it feels to win something big.
It’s the first Auburn trifecta I can remember in ages. An Auburn trifecta? That’s when Auburn wins and Georgia and Alabama lose on the same day. They don’t come often, but when they do, it’s magical—even more so on the national stage.
We all painfully know how bad the men are in the big three sports. Watching these ladies play over the past few weeks have been nothing but joy. Down 3–1 in the seventh to Georgia, their faith never shook. Clint Myers’ team simply went out and took control. It wasn’t so long ago in Jordan-Hare Stadium that the same sort of thing happened.
It doesn’t matter what the sport, it always feels good beating Georgia, especially when you yank their hearts out in the process. Watching Alabama get sent home early just made the weekend all the more better.
There’s no arguing that Kasey Cooper is the best player in the game. She proved all she needed Saturday with the clutch single in the seventh. But the player who’s the most fun to watch, at least to me, is second baseman Emily Carosone.
Her drive to win is infectious. This lady doesn’t quit for anything. On the way to an All-American selection this year, she’s shown the country how to run bases. If you don’t keep your eyes on her, she’ll end up at home plate every time.
As I write this, Auburn stands on the cusp of playing in the national championship series. Four seasons ago, most of us couldn’t spell Auburn softball. In a time where men’s sports are in a depression at Auburn, Myers’ team continues to be the gift that keeps on giving.
Might this be the year? Who could have imagined?
