What happens when two unbeaten teams in the Women’s College World Series meet? Only one can stay undefeated. And for the opening game of the championship series, that team is Oklahoma. The Sooners edged the Auburn Tigers Monday night 3-2.
Both teams came into the match-up hot on the heels of sweeping their brackets. Oklahoma defeated LSU 7-3 Sunday evening and the Tigers rallied from behind to upend Florida State 8-7. Auburn’s valiant effort to rally in the seventh Monday evening fell just short.
Oklahoma’s Sydney Romero accounted for all three Sooner runs when she hit a 3-run homer in the third inning. It was the only mistake that Auburn’s Lexi Davis would make as the senior pitched a solid game allowing three runs in six innings.
OU’s ace pitcher Paige Parker, had pitched every inning for the Sooners in the NCAA Regional, Super Regional, and the College World Series; and many wondered if she could hold up to the Tiger bats.
She was effective until Jade Rhodes tagged her for a two-run shot in the seventh. The Tigers made a valiant effort to continue the rally. Pinch-runner Casey McCrackin attempted to score the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice from Courtney Shea but was thrown out at the plate. The Tigers had runners on the corners with two outs, but couldn’t score.
Auburn (57-11) will try to rebound in the series second game Tuesday. If we’ve learned anything about Clint Meyers team this year is they do not have the word quit in them. They will give the Sooners all they can handle in game two.
Coach Meyers said after the game, “You’re going to see us come out fighting tomorrow. There’s nobody hanging their heads.”
If the Tigers beat Oklahoma (56-7), a decisive third game will be played at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Tuesday’s game will be broadcast at 7 p.m. CT from ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. Go Tigers …
Beat Oklahoma!
