A Blown Career Ends in Likely Jail Time for Hubbard

mike hubbard

What a long, strange trip it has been for Mike Hubbard. The now former Speaker of the House in Alabama faces a future few could have imagined back in 1985 when he was the young gun on David Housel’s SID staff, tasked with promoting Bo Jackson for the Heisman Trophy.

It seemed he had his profession by the tail. Many predicted he’d run Auburn’s athletic department one day. Instead, he went for the money, branched off and started the Auburn Network, an enterprise that had it been run correctly, would have made him a very wealthy man for many years to come.

Instead, he took a detour, got into politics and like so many, was swallowed up by the corruption of Montgomery. Now he awaits almost certain jail time and Auburn fans are left with years of Auburn football highlight videos narrated by a crook. Talk about the bad career move…

Count me among the many baffled by the contract extension granted to Gus Malzahn by athletic director Jay Jacobs. Even the most diehard Auburn fan will admit this is a pivotal year for the fourth-year coach. What does adding an additional year to a contract accomplish?

Gone are the days where recruits believe a five-year contract means anything. No, Malzahn didn’t receive a raise, but he was promised a cool $2 million in additional money should things go south this season.

Maybe money does grow on trees here. It was interesting that the deal was announced at the height of softball fever, when everyone’s attention was focused on Oklahoma City. My guess is, an additional $2 million would go a long way in improving the softball venue.

Let’s call the move what it is: Stupid…

With the spring sports schedule in the books, we should heap praise on the Auburn women’s teams. The softball squad nearly won a title, the equestrian team claimed the national championship, basketball made it back to the big dance, and women’s tennis and soccer each went far into their tournaments.

What can the men’s teams learn from these coaches? Football, men’s basketball and baseball went a combined 15-41 in SEC play. Enough of the negative though. All of these ladies should be celebrated. It may be the single best season for them in school history. Let’s find a way for it to rub-off on the men.

Until next time…
