What Auburn Softball accomplished in Starkville over the weekend is one of the more astonishing things you’ll see on any field. In a little over 24 hours, they bounced fourth-ranked Alabama, top-ranked Florida and put away 13th ranked LSU to claim their second consecutive SEC title.
It was one of the more pleasurable things I’ve ever watched and not just because it was Auburn winning a title. These girls know the definition of teamwork. Their play was as fundamentally sound as you’ll ever see in any sport.
Gus Malzahan and staff could learn a lot hanging around coach Clint Myers. Whatever he’s doing to build that kind of comradery needs to be duplicated across the athletic department. It was Auburn at its very best…
Malzahn has gotten some criticism for not allowing his quarterbacks to work out with private coaches. George Whitfield is one of the bigger names in the new cottage industry and it seems most schools are OK with their quarterbacks spending time with them in the off-season.
So far Malzahn has resisted… until now. Or has he? Word got out over the weekend that John Franklin worked with former Virginia Tech and NFL quarterback Michael Vick, private quarterbacks coach Oliver Bozeman and trainer Dominic Frazier at a park near Franklin’s home in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area on Wednesday.
There’s no word on whether Malzahn gave his blessing. At this point, what can it hurt?…
Speaking of quarterbacks, my money is on Sean White to get the start against Clemson. The question is whether he can keep Franklin off the field as the season progresses…
Was there really much shock to reports that Ole Miss possibly paid former player Larry Tunsil? When you suddenly start landing top-ranked classes and have never done it before, something has to be amiss.
Ole Miss hasn’t won big in football since the Johnson Administration. Things don’t change that quickly. My guess is, Ole Miss will return to their proper pecking order sooner rather than later…
Something tells me Les Miles will rebound this year and Kevin Sumlin will continue to circle the drain. Just a hunch…
How many games does Kirby Smart have to win this year to keep the honeymoon going? He’s a brilliant defensive mind, but having to follow a guy who averaged 10 wins a season is a tall order for anyone. Will he be another Will Muschamp or dare I say, Mark Richt? It’s going to be fun to watch this fall…
Until next time…
