Tigers Place Nine on Preseason All-SEC Teams

Smith, Carlson lead the voting for Auburn

With SEC Media Days finishing up yesterday in Hoover, the various sportswriters and broadcasters have made their selections for the Preseason All-SEC Team.

Auburn placed two players on the First Team: kicker Daniel Carlson and offensive tackle Braden Smith. On the Second Team, Kam Pettway was chosen as Auburn’s only offensive selection, but lineman Marlon Davidson, safety Tray Matthews, lineback Tre Williams, and cornerback Carlton Davis were all selected on the defensive side.

Pettway’s backfield running-mate Kerryon Johnson earned a nod for third-team honors in an all-purpose role along with defensive lineman Dontavius Russell.

As far as the conference standings go, Auburn was picked second in the West and received the second-most votes to win the SEC this fall. Alabama was the media’s pick to win the West and the SEC for the fourth straight season, while Georgia earned the nod as East division champion.

In 2016, Auburn placed seven players on the Preseason All-SEC team, led by Alex Kozan on offense and Carl Lawson on defense. After all was said and done, Kozan did earn first-team honors on the year along with Braden Smith and Kam Pettway, while Carl Lawson managed second-team honors. All told, seven Auburn players did make the All-SEC teams after the season.
