Auburn lands best high school QB signee in years in Joey Gatewood

Joey Gatewood

School: Bartram Trail (Jacksonville, Fla.)

Position: Dual-threat quarterback

Height/weight: 6-foot-4, 232 pounds

Also considered: Florida State, Texas, Oregon

247Sports composite ranking: Gatewood is a four-star recruit, rated as the No. 107 prospect nationally, the No. 3 athlete and No. 22 prospect from Florida.

How he fits into Auburn's plans: Auburn needed a major quarterback recruit in 2018 and it secured Gatewood back in Dec. 2015, before anyone else in its class. He'll be in the running to be the quarterback of the future, which could begin as soon as 2019 depending on if Jarrett Stidham leaves for the NFL and who wins the starting job whenever he does.

Projection for 2018: Auburn has just three quarterbacks on the roster but Stidham is clearly the starter for as long as he's on the Plains. Realistically, Auburn will likely look to redshirt Gatewood in 2018, which was the plan for Malik Willis before Sean White was dismissed.
