Les Miles returns to LSU for Auburn game, but how will he be received? T-Bob Hebert gives take

The Mad Hatter is returning to Tiger Stadium.

Former LSU coach Les Miles will be among those honored during a celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the 2007 national championship team.

The team finished 12-2, beat Tennessee for the SEC title, and then defeated Ohio State 38-24 in New Orleans for the national title.

As fate would have it, LSU hosts No. 10 Auburn on Saturday.

It was a last-second, drama-filled loss to Auburn last season that resulted in Miles' firing in Baton Rouge.

T-Bob Hebert, who was a redshirt freshman in 2007 and played for Miles, joined me on The Opening Kickoff on WNSP-FM 105.5. to discuss the LSU program, Ed Orgeron and the reaction Miles will get when he takes the field.

On Les Miles returning:

"I think it's going to be good, man," said Hebert, who hosts a daily radio show on 104.5 ESPN Baton Rouge. "This was always my great hope. With a little distance and time, the fan base would appreciate coach Miles for he was: a national championship-winning coach and second-winningest coach in school history.

"Ironically, it is things like the Troy loss and some of LSU's struggles this year which may be Miles' greatest ally in getting the fan base to appreciate him again."

Jordan Chunn ran for 191 yards and a touchdown and Troy's defense forced four turnovers in an upset of then-No. 25 LSU 24-21.

Troy became the first team from outside the Southeastern Conference to win in LSU's Death Valley since UAB in 2000. They snapped the Tigers' streak of 49 straight home victories over non-league opponents.

Is Ed Orgeron the right man for the job?

Miles will be honored as the man who replaced him leads the Tigers (4-2, 11) against Auburn (5-1, 3-0).

"I don't know if those wide-sweeping proclamations could be made yet," Hebert said of Orgeron. "I think to fully judge any coach at least two years - I think some people draw their lines at three years - is really needed.

"With that said and with the sample size of information we have, I'm not entirely sure. It is still up in the air. It is somewhere in the middle."

LSU on the right path?

The win last week over Florida went a long way in changing the conversation, per Hebert.

Danny Etling threw a touchdown pass in the second half and LSU rebounded from the loss to Troy with a 17-16 win over then-No. 21 Florida in The Swamp.

"It's the ultimate proof football is purely results-oriented," Hebert explained. "The tenor of the coverage is going to be decided by whether you win or lose the game, devoid of context.

"It has been much more positive this week. I think most LSU fans, if you ask them, Troy or Florida? You are going to win one. You are going to lose one. I think most would take this set up in a vacuum because the hate for Florida is that real. ...

"However, what this week proves, what today proves, is that there is no rest for the weary. You got a good win. This is the SEC. You are in the meat of the SEC schedule. You've got another really good team you have to go face.

"Quite frankly, this team is way better than LSU on paper. LSU should not win this game. It doesn't mean they can't, but they should not. This Auburn team is much better than the Florida team they just beat."
