Link sAUsage: What to Do About the Offense?

September 11, 2017

Well, if there’s one thing to say after a loss, it’s that there’s never a shortage of stuff to talk about or report on. It’s the same after Saturday’s loss to defending national champion Clemson. The offense gained a Malzahn-low 117 total yards (with just 15 in the second half), and Auburn lost 14-6. Any offensive output at all - AT ALL - would’ve likely given the good Tigers a huge road victory. As it is, a fantastic defensive game was wasted, and we now sit at 1-1.

What did the head coach say immediately following the game?

Yeah, the offense was historically bad, for a lot of reasons. For a bright spot, look at the defense.

It’s going to be bad for you, Mercer.

But back to what needs improvement, the offense was really bad. Really bad.

The above link is one of the biggest issues with Saturday night. Auburn didn’t even seem to try anything new, when Kam Martin had himself a fantastic opener, he was on the bench the entire night. That’s unfathomable!

After that game, it’s tough not to remember 2008, when a head coach went to something new (for them) and it didn’t work out, leading to a mid-season firing and a lost year. I hope we see improvement, because I don’t want to have to worry about all of that mess.

And what we heard leading up to the opener was how the offensive line was as talented as its ever been. What’s happened is that they’ve allowed a billion sacks and gotten little push in the run game. It’s definitely time to shuffle things around.

All in all, Auburn’s ranking didn’t really take a hit. They fell to #17 in the Coaches Poll, and just fell two spots to #15 in the AP Poll. That’s still pretty good, with plenty of room for upward growth should they string together some wins before Baton Rouge.

Anyway, busy Monday. Let’s see how the team reacts after the loss.

War Eagle.
