Week one of the 2015 college football season began Thursday night and continues through Labor Day on Monday. Saturday the No. 12 Auburn Tigers face the program built by Auburn alumn Erk Russell.
Coach Russell was the Tigers’ last four-sport letterman. A native of Birmingham, he was a star tight end from 1946–49 and earned 10 varsity letters at Auburn. He was an assistant football coach for Shug Jordan from 1958–62, and left to join Vince Dooley at Georgia eventually becoming the Dogs defensive coordinator.
He basically started the football program at Georgia Southern in 1981. He’s a legend in Statesboro where he went 88–22–1 in eight seasons and won three national championships.
He passed away in 2006, but those who knew him said he lived by the Auburn Creed and was a true Auburn man. So you can bet that he will be watching Saturday’s contest on the Plains as both of his old teams will be doing battle beginning at 6:30 CT.
As for our Tigers, they seem to be ready to take on the Eagles vaunted triple option. It will be a test for the defense for sure. But most Tiger fans are looking forward to watching new QB Jarrett Stidham team up with his quality receiving corps. Who will be his favorite target?
