Austin Wiley Sidelined with Stress Fracture

Auburn’s sophomore center out 4-6 weeks

Some news broke not long ago from the Auburn basketball camp, concerning one of the biggest cogs on the Tiger roster.

It doesn’t seem to be a cause for major alarm, as there won’t be any surgery to repair the broken bone. Still, having played (and played well) on a broken left leg while on the USA U19 team makes you wince a bit. Austin Wiley should be ready for the start of preseason work for the Auburn basketball team, and more than healed by the time scrimmages and the regular season begins.

Wiley showed off in the FIBA U19 World Cup in Egypt over the past few weeks, as he became the only player on the American team to average a double-double. Leading up to the start of the games, Wiley also dominated in training, earning a ton of praise from his coaches and media members present at the time.

All in all, it doesn’t seem like this is a huge issue, but it’s something to keep an eye on. Being unsure in how one’s body will respond after an injury and recovery can be detrimental to an athlete. You may remember Cadillac Williams’ broken leg in the 2002 season — it took a big hit on the leg after a couple games in 2003 to show him that it was strong enough to go one-hundred percent. Hopefully, Austin Wiley can recover quickly, because he’ll certainly be one of the key pieces of Bruce Pearl’s 2017-18 squad.
