5 Star Quarterback Justin Fields Decommits From Penn State

What does this mean for Auburn?

If you don't follow recruiting at all, you're probably asking yourself why the hell we're posting something about a 5* QB decommitting from a B1G school.

If you do follow recruiting, then you know exactly why we're posting about it.

Auburn already has one QB committed for the 2018 cycle in 4* Joey Gatewood. There have been questions about whether Gatewood is a QB at the collegiate level and whether he may change positions, but at the Elite 11 finals last weekend, there was a lot of praise about his progress as a QB.

Still, though, Auburn's QB depth is thin. With Tyler Queen and Woody Barrett transfering, the roster is essentially Jarrett Stidham, Sean White, and Malik Willis. At least one, maybe two, of those QBs could be gone after the upcoming season. They may all return, but you never know. So, Auburn wants to build depth. That's where a second QB target comes in.

And, folks, there is no higher target on Auburn's list than Justin Fields. According to the 247Sports Composite, he is the 6th ranked overall player and the 2nd ranked QB in the nation. He has offers from virtually everyone. And he's high on the Tigers.

It helps when you're good friends with Cam Newton. He plays on Cam's Cam Newton All-Stars 7v7 team. He's also high on Auburn OC Chip Lindsey, though. That and a close proximity to home - he's from Harrison High School in Kennesaw, GA - put Auburn on good footing.

There are plenty of other programs after him, though. Florida and UGA are probably the biggest competitors. Currently, his 247Sports Crystal Ball picks are heavily in the Gators' favor.

This is going to be an interesting one to watch. He'll be participating in a number of camps this summer - including the Rivals 5-Star Challenge, soon - and he a decision on where he will commit next could come at any point. 247Sports has some good intel on a likely time frame, but that's behind their paywall.

Keep your eye on this one. It could be one of the biggest BOOMs for Gus & Company on the recruiting trail on the QB front and show just how much people respect Chip Lindsey as a QB coach.
