Marlon Character, Antwuan Jackson Transferring from Auburn

Two Redshirt Freshmen Leaving the Program

Auburn’s defensive depth took a hit Thursday as it was announced Marlon Character and Antwuan Jackson have chosen to transfer.

Character, a former 3-star recruit at safety played a position of need for the Tigers, but also a position where the starters are pretty set in stone. It wasn’t likely he was going to be challenging for the starting job this season.

Jackson, a former four star recruit at defensive end played on the second team during the A-day game and recorded a sack. He appears to be seeking a fresh start after a disappointing 2016 season. As Auburn looks to replace Carl Lawson and Mon Adams, any loss on the defensive line can’t be taken lightly.

Sometimes transfers happen because the culture of a team is turning sour, but sometimes they happen because the level of play is getting better. When it becomes apparent a player won’t be getting time on the field, they seek opportunities elsewhere. Let’s hope this is the case as these two players now make three who have announced intentions to transfer in the past few weeks.

Personally, I wish these guys success. I also don’t think this is an indication that Auburn’s locker room culture is heading downhill. I think there is a ton of talent on this team and the competition for playing time is going to be very stiff in the fall as the freshmen get on campus.
