Auburn Baseball vs Georgia How To Watch and Series Preview, 24-26 March 2017

The Tigers are still on the road as they prepare to face the Bulldogs in Athens.

Fresh off their 8th win in a row - a 7-4 win over ACC rival Georgia Tech - Auburn is preparing for their first true road series this weekend against the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens.

Auburn (18-5, 3-0) has been winning games in every way imaginable of late. They've thrashed opponents with the bats. They've won pitchers duels. They've won based on luck (all of UF's errors last Sunday) and never giving up. But one constant through it all has been some fairly outstanding pitching by the starters. The Tigers are on a roll with their 8 victories in a row and a sweep of Florida on the Plains.

Georgia (9-13, 0-3) has struggled somewhat to start the season. I'm not sure who Rider is, but the Dawgs dropped a series to Rider. They were swept in their first SEC series of the year at LSU last weekend. Their Friday night blowout loss to LSU was even worse (22-9) than Auburn's blowout victory over Florida.

The Tigers will put out the usual weekend rotation against the Bulldogs of Keegan Thompson, Casey Mize, and Davis Daniel. Just how good are Thompson and Mize? Well, this should give you a good idea:

Former starter Cole Lipscomb is the reliever who cleans up behind those two, which makes the Tigers very tough to beat on Friday and Saturday. That is, of course, the plan.

Fri. 6 p.m.
RHP Keegan Thompson (4-0, 0.78) vs. LHP Andrew Gist (1-1, 4.82)
Sat. 1 p.m.
RHP Casey Mize (3-0, 0.30) vs. RHP Tony Locey (2-3, 7.65)
Sun. 12 p.m.

RHP Davis Daniel (1-0, 5.75) vs. RHP Chase Adkins (3-1, 2.97)

I'll take Auburn in those Friday and Saturday match-ups and it's not even close. Even on the road.

ERA Opp ERA BA OBA Slugging % On Base %
Auburn 3.36 5.95 .304 .237 .418 .402
Georgia 5.56 4.62 .269 .263 .404 .350

Just going by stats, this is a series Auburn should win. The Tigers' starting pitching for the first two games is way above and beyond the Bulldogs'. The Dawgs don't have the greatest hitters, though junior Keegan McGovern is a pretty dangerous batter with a .348 batting average. Aside from him, the Dawgs only have one batter hitting above .300. They're pretty decent at hitting the long ball, though, with 21 home runs so far this season.

If there's one strange - but also impressive - thing about Auburn's success at the plate this season, it's just how little of that has been with home runs. Auburn only has 7 home runs so far this season. They are, however, near the top in the national stats when it comes to hitting doubles. The Tigers get hits and they get extra base hits. Those are very good ways to get runs across the plate. They have 140 RBIs compared to UGA's 97.

Auburn has a real chance to get the SEC slate off with a 6-0 start. Starting 5-1 will still be perfectly acceptable, though. Dropping this series to what is apparently a bad UGA team would, however, could be a big setback to a team that's looking very confident and impressive right now.

First pitch tonight is 6:00 pm Central in Athens. All three games will be available through the WatchESPN app. Go get 'em, Tigers!

News and notes from the Auburn corners of the Internet

Random note before we get to the links: Auburn, Massachusetts must be a really dangerous place. The feedly tool I use to quickly get stories is constantly filled with violent crime, missing people, etc from Auburn, MA. I have to stop and check to make sure it's not our Auburn every time, too.

On another note, this is short today. I spent all day yesterday either on a plane or in an airport and I'm ready for sleep as I put this together. it takes 1 hour and 40 minutes to walk basically every terminal space in Dallas-Fort Worth, by the way. I got really bored in my 4-hour layover and discovered that. But, hey, I got a good workout. I just considered it an "urban hike" with my backpack on.

Is Woody Barrett the Next Jalen Hurts?

Ben

If one listens to sports talk radio in the South, being subjected to Alabama football is an everyday occurrence because local radio stations are all Alabama affiliates and/or carriers of the Paul Finebaum show. It was the aforementioned show that caught my ear this time last year. Alabama was going to be breaking in yet another starting quarterback, and the question was, “Who would replace the graduated Jake Coker?” It seemed like every day on the radio show, beat reporters gave the pecking order of the three competitors. Still, it was Jalen Hurts who continued to make the conversation. That was awfully interesting for a true freshman that didn’t, in any way, fit the mold of the other players.

Just weeks before the Alabama spring game, AL.com reported on the projected depth chart, and quarterbacks were the very first position group referenced. Writers had this to say on the most important position on the team: “With Jake Coker out of eligibility, Alabama again has to break in a new quarterback in 2016. The top two options appear to be Cooper Bateman and Blake Barnett. Bateman, a rising junior, should be the early favorite after finishing second to Coker and even starting the Ole Miss game over the fifth-year senior. Offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin likes Bateman, and the Utah native should be a good fit in his offense. Barnett, who redshirted this year, is the highly-regarded former five-star recruit. Barnett had to put on weight after arriving in Tuscaloosa, but coaches like him, and he’s viewed as the future of the offense. The wild card is David Cornwell, who looked to be a serious contender heading into fall camp, but fell off the pack and finished behind Coker, Bateman and Alec Morris.”

It is certainly interesting to read the thoughts of the writers plugged into the program. Not mentioned was Jalen Hurts, who, as everyone knows, showed out during the spring game when the other competitors were less than impressive. In the weeks that followed, the same conversations continued. Hurts never left his spot as the dark-horse while the others seemed to fall away. Eventually, Hurts was named starter and went on to be the SEC Offensive Player of the year.

Auburn has an interesting situation shaping up in its quarterback race. Most observers believe that the talented former five-star recruit, Jarrett Stidham, will become Auburn’s next starter with oft-injured Sean White being the backup.

Like Alabama’s Bateman, White has started games. He has been serviceable and even decent for Auburn. While fans admire his fight and desire to be the man at quarterback, most would agree that they have seen the full scope of White’s ability: a player with a limited arm and limited play-making ability player with good command of an oft-hamstrung offense.

Stidham may be likened to Barnett’s measurables and ability and has game film from his time at Baylor. Still, one must cautiously project Big 12 success to the SEC, especially with such a small sample size.

Then there is Woody Barrett…

Because he is a freshman and hasn’t started a college game, he is automatically dismissed, but he shouldn’t be. It wasn’t so long ago that our own AubTigerman wrote about Barrett as The Forgotten Man and caused some real conversation among our readers. That was before practice began, and not much has changed since. That’s exactly the point.

Not only has a pecking order not been named, but both coach Malzahn and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey have said that a starter won’t be named in the spring. There are only two people this benefits. One is White, still trying to make a comeback from a broken arm in spite of competing against Stidham and his far better arm and physical ability and Barrett, who has superior game-breaking ability. The other person is Barrett .

It appears the true competition is between Stidham and Barrett.

Lindsey, himself, is part of the equation. Rhett Lashlee left after a second consecutive lackluster offensive year, and another bad year will likely mean a house cleaning on the offensive side. Lindsey knows that. He also knows what he has with White. Does he want to go that route or trust another?

While Stidham has the arm talent to be an Air Raid quarterback, Auburn’s receivers have been less than spectacular the past few years. If this continues, Stidham could become irrelevant.

Barrett is the closest thing to a Malzahn-preferred dual threat quarterback.  While Auburn’s road-grading run game might factor well into a Stidham-led offense, it is picture perfect for one led by Barrett. Because of that, as long as Barrett remains in the fight while the rest rearrange the deck chairs, he remains a legitimate contender to be the next Jalen Hurts.

Auburn Football Recruiting News: Auburn Narrowing in on Another Commitment?

The Tigers commit list could grow soon.

Two weeks ago, the Tigers landed their 5th commitment of the cycle in 4* OG Jalil Irvin. I hinted in that article that I thought there might be more on the way but so far that hasn’t happened. Personally, the name I was thinking of was 4* CB Jalyn Armour-Davis who is rumored to be nearing a decision and could pop at any time. Now, however, there is a new name at the top of the list: 3* LB Richard Jibunor.

The Nigerian native has an incredible story, Benjamin Wolk over at SECCountry detailed it this week. Something I thought was incredibly interesting was his relationship with redshirt sophomore OT Prince Tega Wanogho

Jibunor knew the Auburn offensive lineman before either left Nigeria, and he got to know Wanogho better once it became clear both would pursue college football. Jibunor relishes having that friendship on the Plains, which gives him a comfort with Auburn he doesn’t share many other places.

“Going to Auburn, I needed a place where I had a strong relationship with coaches and knew people. With Auburn, Tega has been there. They treat him well and everything. I went to the camp, and coaches told me how great Tega was doing. It was awesome because everything he was telling me was the same as what Tega was telling me, so I knew it was real,” Jibunor said. “He tells me everything that goes on. He’s someone who is like a big brother for me. It’s been years. We’ve known each other for a long time.”

Pretty crazy that two kids who know each other growing up in Nigeria might end up playing collegiate football together in the United State at the same college. Sounds like a hard to believe movie. I highly recommend reading that article linked above.

Despite his low ranking, he is a clear top target for the Auburn staff. He could honestly play almost any position on defense sans CB or DT and also play a few offensive spots like WR or TE. His highlight film shows him doing almost everything you can imagine whether it’s covering kicks, catching passes, tackling ball carriers or even punting. More than likely he will end up at the Buck spot where he can rush the passer. His build and athleticism remind me some of Jeff Holland coming out of high school.

Jibunor plans to be on campus again this weekend after attending Auburn’s most recent junior day and could be back for A-Day as well. I don’t think it’s a stone cold lock he commits this weekend but another visit so soon and with the positive vibes he is sending AU’s way, I don’t think it’s out of the question. I do expect his ranking to improve over the 2018 cycle and wouldn’t be shocked if he ended up this year’s Tadarrian Moultry ending the season as one of Auburn’s top-ranked commits. It’s a long ways to go and Auburn will have to battle some big names such as Alabama, Georgia, and Michigan to land the stud athlete but right now it’s hard not to feel good about where Auburn stands.

3* DT Postpones Commitment

Two weekends ago, 3* DT Timaje Porter tweeted he planned on having a commitment ceremony tomorrow. He was expected to decide between LSU and Auburn. However, after a recent visit to LSU that included him landing an LSU offer, Porter has decided to postpone his commitment. Part of this is probably because he planned on picking Auburn (his leader for some time now) until he had a great visit to LSU but it might also be that neither team is ready just yet to accept his commitment. Auburn only plans on taking two defensive tackles this cycle and the top targets appear to be Texas Tech transfer Breiden Fehoko and 4* Coynis Miller. But that is just speculation on my part.

Still, it appears that AU’s lead for the 320 lb nose guard has evaporated and it’s a clear battle between the two schools. He still wants to announce before his senior season so he’s a name to keep an eye on this summer. Porter played closer to 340 lbs last season which is too big but he supposedly has slimmed down some this summer and is working on getting to a solid 320 lbs of good weight before the season. If he does that, he is a guy that could rise on quite a few school’s boards this fall.

Two Top Targets Release Top Groups

Two of Auburn’s top targets released their top groups this past weekend. First, 4* RB Master Teague tweeted his top 12 that included the Auburn Tigers. South Carolina is thought to be the trending team at this time but there are quite a few schools to watch in this recruitment including Auburn. Personally, Teague is my favorite AU RB target (outside of guys like Zamir White and Lorenzo Lingard) because I think his style of running fits perfectly into Auburn’s system. It’s going to take some work to land him though and I am not sure where he stands on the coach’s board compared to Harold Joiner and Asa Martin but I suspect he is close to the top.

The other big news was 4* WR Jacob Copeland, who made it clear that three teams have separated themselves from the pack: Clemson, Florida, and Auburn. He told Derek Tyson over at ESPN that Clemson is his leader but it appears AU is very much in the thick of it. A big part of that is his close relationship with Kodi Burns. Burns took a lot of heat on AU message boards after last year’s not as flashy WR class but his name has been mentioned quite a few times as a reason for a player’s interest this cycle. If Auburn lands Copeland chances are extremely high it will be in large part because of Kodi Burns.

News and notes from the Auburn corners of the Internet

BASKETBALL

The usual offseason attrition from the basketball team has claimed it's first - and, I hope, only - victim as T.J. Lang has announced that he intends to transfer and finish his playing career elsewhere. He'll have to sit out a year if he doesn't drop down a division, as he's not a grad transfer.

EQUESTRIAN

Some of the Tigers' rides have earned monthly SEC honors. They're preparing for the SEC Championships this weekend as Auburn.

GOLF

Senior Matt Gilchrest was named one of five finalists for the prestigious Byron Nelson Award.

SOFTBALL

Kasey Cooper and the 4th ranked Tigers are comfortable and ready to take on #2 Florida in Gainesville, this weekend.

FOOTBALL

Marlon Davidson is "staying humble" in his second season on the Plains. He's said he never really truly felt like he belonged as the starter on the defensive line as a true freshman.

How is Byron Cowart doing in his move to defensive tackle? His fellow defensive linemen say he has "that swag about him." Hopefully, Byron can really turn it up this year. He's a genuinely nice guy from the time I've met him and he has a lot of natural talent.

Auburn continues to evaluate and recruit a young receiver from Hoover named Shedrick Jackson. Perhaps you've heard of his uncle, Vincent Jackson.

Back at Work!

Spring resumes

Spring practice resumes, and the future becomes less murky.

War Eagle, everybody! It’s been quite the week at Auburn. While the football team took a break, Auburn proceeded to take care of some top opponents in both baseball and softball. I marvel at it all. It seems that for much of the past decade, we had two stick-ball teams that could hardly make the post season. Both teams now are a big source of Auburn pride!

This week, the football team gets back to work. It’s hard to believe that A-Day is only a couple of weeks away. I expect that there’s a lot for the coaches and players to get done, before showing off on that spring Saturday.

I have to say that I’m glad to see Auburn’s quarterback picture get a little less murky, this spring. When Auburn has struggled the past couple of seasons, it has largely been because the team had quarterback issues. During the break, a couple of things crystallized. Tyler Queen is transferring out, and John Franklin III is moving to wide receiver. I think those are good moves for both players. We got a bit of a look at Queen in the second half of the 2015 A-Day game. He’s got a live arm and good running ability. He needs to be playing somewhere, not sitting on the bench. Franklin has NFL-worthy speed, and he needs to see the field as well, this year.

The coaches are not going to name a starting quarterback this spring, as we know. However, from all accounts, Jarrett Stidham is the guy to beat. Still, I think the coaches have to give junior Sean White a look this fall when he is healed from the broken arm suffered in the Sugar Bowl. When White was healthy last fall, the offense was absolutely blowing SEC defenses up. I don’t think it is a bad thing at all, to have more than one good quarterback ready to go. One of the big issues the past couple of seasons was when the coaches had to change quarterbacks due to injury, they’d put the next guy in there with proverbial handcuffs on. Opposing defensive coordinators feasted on that.

If a quarterback is going to shine, guys have to step up around him. The line has to protect the quarterback, and his receivers have to get open and catch the ball. We won’t get to see too much of a wide-open offense on A-Day. However, one does get a good chance in the spring game to evaluate whether the line can keep the quarterback upright under a 4 man rush, and whether guys can perform at the receiver spots. Also, quarterback accuracy is also on display. Several times in the past decade, I watched Auburn spring quarterbacks bounce-pass easy throws or sail them over the receivers’ heads. Invariably the following fall, the team struggled mightily on offense.

I was thinking going into this spring that Auburn had to find a set offensive line quickly, and get the new guys settled in. However, I keep hearing great things about a number of players. We know what Austin Golson, Braden Smith and Darius James can do, as all started last season. We are hearing good reviews on Mike Horton, Prince Tega Wanogho, Prince Michael Sammons, and others. It’s going to be hard to narrow down the candidates to just 5 starters, it seems. That’s not really a bad problem to have!

Defensively, I think Auburn has a chance to be really good, again this season. There is depth at all three levels, and a lot of experienced players return. Last season, the team did a great job of forcing plays to the sideline, and making tackles for little or no gain. I expect a similarly powerful result, this season.

Auburn’s special teams have been a strength for several years, and I figure that will continue this year. Punter Kevin Phillips has to be replaced, as does sure-handed punt returner Marcus Davis. However, Auburn has the players to do that. The Tigers have a chance to be really explosive in the return game, but whomever ends up returning balls will have to prove that the ball is secure, no matter what. Of course, the Tiger place-kicking game is in great shape, with Daniel Carlson returning for his senior campaign.

Auburn Basketball Guard T.J. Lang Announces Transfer

3J Lang is moving on from the Tigers.

TJ Lang was a part of Bruce Pearl's first signing class at Auburn. If I recall correctly, he was the only hold-over recruited by Tony Barbee. He looked to have a bright future in limited minutes his first season, showed signs of his great shooting ability in his sophomore season, but slumped a bit and slipped down the depth chart in his junior season when Auburn turned mainly to the talented freshmen on the team. He also struggled with injuries throughout his career.

Today, following his junior season, Lang announced his intention to transfer via Twitter.

When TJ's 3-point shooting was on, he was magnificent. Overall, though, it's not surprising that he has decided to move on from Auburn to finish his playing career. With the current roster situation, it is likely his time wasn't going to increase, and he will have a better chance to shine elsewhere. We wish him the best wherever he goes. He'll always be an Auburn Tiger and a part of the Family.

War Eagle and good luck, TJ.

News and notes from the Auburn corners of the Internet

BASEBALL

The Tigers won their 8th game in a row with Tuesday night's 7-4 victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta. It was the first road game of the season and it's easy to see how there could have been a let-down after last weekend's sweep of Florida. Instead, the Tigers performed well, overall, and came away with the big win.

SOFTBALL

The Tigers remain the 4th ranked team in the nation following last weekend. That's not really surprising given that the Tigers didn't look as steady in their sweep as they should have against the competition. It's funny that they did the best against the best competition, but struggled more than expected against the weaker.

FOOTBALL

A backup quarterback is transferring from Auburn. It's honestly the least surprising news of the Spring, to be honest. With the way things have played out in his Auburn career, so far, it wasn't likely that he was going to get into the battle.

Auburn was back on the practice field yesterday as the students returned from Spring Break. They're getting ready for the first scrimmage of the Spring this Saturday. Gus Malzahn met with the media and updated the status of WR Kyle Davis (still not back), injured players (doing well), and more.

Here's a bit more (though not much) on the Kyle Davis situation. Hopefully, whatever his "personal issues," he works his way through them. He's a serious talent with a very bright future and we definitely hope for his sake that whatever issues he's having, he gets them worked out.

Auburn Wins Eight Straight

22328332-mmmain

Ever since I wrote about my concerns regarding midweek baseball games, Auburn has begun to ease those worries. The Tigers went on the road on Tuesday night to face an always dangerous Georgia Tech team, and came out on top, 7-4.

Tuesday night’s victory marked Auburn’s eighth consecutive win coming off of its weekend sweep against Florida. The Tigers put 11 hits on the board in last night’s game, six of which were doubles.

Christian Camacho was on the mound for the Tigers, as he allowed just one run in 4 1/3 innings. Calvin Coker was credited for the win after getting the last two outs in the fifth inning, and Cole Lipscomb earned his fourth save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Auburn is fortunate to have only given up four runs though, as the Yellow Jackets hit three home runs in the game.

Leading the Tigers in the hits column were Jonah Todd, Daniel Robert, Conor Davis and Will Holland with two hits for each. No home runs for the Tigers last night, but they weren’t needed, as the six doubles of the evening — a season high — were enough to get the win.

Auburn heads to Athens this weekend to take on a Georgia team that was swept against LSU last weekend. It’s important for the Tigers to further strengthen their SEC record with a very winnable series on hand this weekend.

Auburn QB Tyler Queen Announces He Will Transfer

Auburn quarterback Tyler Queen announced Tuesday that he will transfer to another school.

Queen made the decision public with the following tweet:

The Georgia native joined the Tigers in 2015, but elbow and shoulder injuries prevented him from making an impact.

Queen didn't attempt a pass last season, but he did have one rush for 11 yards in a 55-0 win over Alabama A&M.

In 2014, Scout.com listed Queen as a 4-star prospect and the No. 22 quarterback in his class prior to committing to Auburn.

Queen was expected to compete for Auburn's starting quarterback job ahead of the 2017 campaign.

As part of a crowded quarterback depth chart that also includes returning starter Sean White, Baylor transfer Jarrett Stidham, Woody Barrett, Malik Willis and John Franklin III, however, Queen's opportunities may have been limited.

Backup Quarterback Tyler Queen Transferring From Auburn

The Tigers are down one QB, now.

This afternoon, via Twitter, backup quarterback Tyler Queen announced his intention to transfer from Auburn University.

This isn't a move that should really shock anyone. Queen has only seen a handful of snaps in garbage time last season after being injured and redshirting his freshman season. He was limited in practice during the Spring and then went through yet another shoulder surgery. He's been on a "pitch count" for most of his practice time with the team.

With Jarrett Stidham, Sean White, Woody Barrett, and Malik Willis on the roster, Queen wasn't likely to have much of a chance to break through into the rotation. It's unsurprising that he will seek to do so elsewhere, now.

We wish Tyler all the best in his journey. I really think that - if he had been healthy - he really would have had a chance to make a name for himself in last year's quarterback struggles. It just wasn't to be. Hopefully, he finds a good landing place and is very successful.

News and notes from the Auburn corners of the Internet

AUBURN UNIVERSITY

The school has named the 19th President, and it's the name that was floating around message boards for the last week or so: Dr. Steven Leath of Iowa State University.

BASEBALL

D1baseball.com, one of - if not THE - premier college baseball sites wrote about Auburn's sweep of Florida and how the team is working together in the dugout and helping the coaches. It's easy to see why this team looked so good against Florida last weekend.

They weren't the only ones. BaseballAmerica.com also wrote about the Tigers' weekend sweep. There's even a shoutout to some of this site's original founders who watch every game from the top of the parking deck.

See the official site's notebook on the weekend that is now up. The Tigers are on the road tonight for the first time this season to face Georgia Tech in Atlanta. It will be interesting to see how they take their first road trip of the season.

For his effort this weekend - which included a 4 RBI performance, one of the key bunts in Sunday's 9th inning, and some fantastic defensive work - Will Holland was named the SEC Co-Freshman of the Week.

The Tigers have worked their way into the national rankings this week

The NCBWA poll is normally released on a Tuesday. Since Auburn was in "27th" last week (2nd in "others receiving votes"), I'm going to guess they find their way into the Top 25 in that poll, too.

GYMNASTICS

It may have been a disappointing regular season, but the Tigers are still in the NCAA post-season. They travel to Fayetteville for the Arkansas regional. News and notes from the Auburn corners of the Internet

SOFTBALL

The official site goes behind the numbers on the details of Kaylee Carlson's perfect game against Ohio State.

FOOTBALL

Spring Practice resumes today and will continue each week as we get closer to A-Day. SECcountry.com has some things we should be looking for as they get back at it. The first scrimmage will probably happen this weekend, so hopefully, we'll get some good stuff from that.

Tigers Softball Update

58a7b731f4088.image

The Tigers emerged from the SEC opener against LSU victorious but didn’t exactly escape without any lumps. The Yellow and Purple Tigers from Louisiana actually outscored Auburn 16–10, winning game two by run-ruling the Orange and Blue, something softball fans haven’t seen in quite some time. Auburn beat LSU 5–4 in games one and three to take the series.

The next two games against Tennessee in Columbia, TN and MTSU in Murfreesboro, TN were canceled due to inclement weather. Coach Clint Myers and his team made the most of five off days to prepare for the USF Invitational, which took place in both Clearwater and Tampa.

The Tigers had all they wanted from North Dakota State in their first game. While Kaylee Carlson held the Bisons to just three hits, Auburn needed a Madi Gipson walk-off single to score pinch runner Bree Fornis in a 2–1 win. The Tigers had eight hits, but they couldn’t string enough together to do much damage.

Auburn turned it around against USF in the second game of the double-header. Makayla Martin took the circle for the Tigers and shut out the Bulls, giving up just two hits on four strikeouts despite five walks. The Bulls’ two hits came in the first and last innings. In the meantime, Victoria Draper logged three hits on four at-bats, but it was Carlee Wallace’s two run homer in the 4th broke the game open for the Tigers.

On the 18th against Illinois, Martin started Auburn’s first game of the double header. In six innings of work, she allowed two earned runs on five hits while adding four strikeouts. Kasey Cooper made it into the record books for Auburn with her two hits and four RBIs, becoming the second player in SEC history to have 250 hits and 250 RBI’s.

However, it was Kaylee Carlson who stole the show later that afternoon. She did so in an 8–0 run-rule win against Ohio State. While she must be given credit for a masterful game, she didn’t do with with strike-outs. She forced the Buckeyes to hit at her defense. That defense was flawless. Along the way, Carlee Wallace added three RBI’s.

A transformation continues for the young Auburn program. Last year’s hot bats have cooled dramatically, but the pitching has been phenomenal. Both Carlson and Martin have ERA’s under one, an amazing statistic. Reliever Jenna Abbott has an ERA of 1.00 in her five appearances. Young Ashlee Swindle has struggled thus far, with a 3.78 ERA in ten appearances. On the hitting side, Kendall Veach leads in home runs, having hit seven dingers, though she posts the worst batting average of the regular starters. On the other end of the order, Draper is hitting .411 with no homers and a .492 on-base percentage. Haley Fagan has become the hitter Tiger fans remember from 2015 with five homers, a .337 average and an OBP of .450. Her 30 hits are more than any player on the team, and her slugging percentage is at the top.

Up next are the Florida Gators in Gainesville. While Auburn can claim two straight SEC championships and a WCWS Finals appearance, Florida has been Auburn’s kryptonite. The Gators moved up to number two this past weekend and received five votes as the best team in the nation. The Tigers slipped from No. 2 to No. 4. This will be a premier matchup and kicks off Saturday night at 5:00 p.m. central. Game two is Sunday at 5:00 p.m. and game three is at 6:00 p.m. Monday. Games one and two are scheduled to be aired on ESPN2.

Coach Myers is scheduled to give an update on Washington transfer Tannon Snow, missing on the field since before the season began.

A Look at Auburn Softball

AUBURN SOFTBALL ENTERS SEC PLAY

Spring is here and it is time for a report on the Auburn Softball team. The Softball team just returned from playing in Florida and several program records were set. Kaylee Carlson pitched the second perfect game in Auburn Softball history against Ohio State (Auburn won 8-0) and Kasey Cooper became the second player in SEC history to have 250 hits and RBIs. Auburn is now number 4 in the USA with 27 wins and 3 losses and they will begin a difficult SEC schedule against the Florida Gators in Gainesville on March 25 at 6 P.M. The game will be televised on ESPN2. Auburn did play LSU earlier in the season and won 2 from the 3 game series. Some of the Auburn hitters to watch are Kasey Cooper, Carlee Wallace, Haley Fagan and Kendall Veach. If you are in Auburn this Spring, I would suggest that you check the schedule and come out to watch these ladies play. If the stadium is full just come on out to the left field seats and tail gate.

Here are the highlights from that "perfect" game by Kaylee Carlson against Ohio State.

Auburn University Names Iowa State President Dr. Steven Leath As New University President

The University has found Dr. Jay Gogue's replacement.

Auburn University has been searching for a new President since Dr. Jay Gogue announced his intentions to retire this summer back on September 16th of last year. Now, it appears, the Board of Trustees has made a decision. The candidate offered the position is Dr. Steven Leath, the President of Iowa State University.

Dr. Leath has been the President at Iowa State since 2012 according to his bio. He has served in numerous key research roles in his administrative and teaching career at North Carolina State and also as the Vice President for Research at The University of North Carolina for five years before taking the position at Iowa State. He holds a B.S. in plant science from Pennsylvania State University, M.S. in plant science from the University of Delaware, and Ph.D. in plant pathology from the University of Illinois.

Iowa State has a lot in common with Auburn as a land grant school that focuses on Agriculture and Research. I'm sure this played a large part in Auburn's decision. Some may wonder why the President of an AAU (Association of American Universities) school may leave that post for a non-AAU post, but I would like to think that shows just how attractive Auburn University is as a research and academic institution.

Dr. Leath doesn't come without some controversy. There were some issues with his use of University planes while at ISU, but an auditor ultimately found that the use fell in the "shades of gray" category.

It's hard to say what Dr. Leath's appointment may mean for Athletics. I know that's what's on the mind of plenty of readers of this site. Though I'd also like to think our crowd here also finds the academic side of the University to be even more important - as much as we love the sports. We'll have to take a "wait and see" approach on whether he will remain hands-off as Dr. Gogue did or if he will be more involved.

Regardless, the Board has made its choice, and the new President has been approved. Welcome to Auburn, Dr. Leath. We think you'll love our Little Village.
