Auburn Softball Weekend Wrap-Up: 26 February 2017

The ladies had a good weekend overall, but couldn't close it out Sunday afternoon.

Auburn Softball played two doubleheaders this weekend on Friday and Saturday before closing it out with a single game against #13 James Madison on Sunday. Overall, it was a good weekend. The ladies dominated Friday and Saturday - including a no-hitter against Yale, Unfortunately, it didn't end on a high note with a possible #1 ranking on the line.

The weekend started with a 6-0 victory over North Dakota Thursday night. For the next three games, Auburn's quiet bats came alive in a way we haven't really seen so far this season.

Auburn beat UMass-Lowell 13-0 in Game One on Friday. They then turned right around and beat North Dakota again, 8-0. Saturday afternoon began with the 9-0 no-hitter of Yale. All three of those games were run-rule victories.

The Saturday afternoon game against James Madison was most definitely not a run-rule win. The Tigers did win that one 4-0, though, which gave the Tigers yet another Top 15 victory on the season.

Sunday, though, saw a pitchers' duel between JMU's ace Megan Good and Auburn's Makayla Martin. JMU was one of the few teams to beat Auburn early on last season. They made it to a Super Regional last year. The Dukes have an excellent team, but Auburn in front of the home crowd still expected to come away with the win. Good shut down the Tigers' batters and the Dukes' one run was enough for them to take Sunday's game.

With that win, Auburn likely lost the sure-thing to be the #1 team in the nation when the rankings come out next week. The Tigers now have two losses compared to Florida's one. The one thing Auburn has going for it is that the Tigers' two losses have been against Top 15 ranked teams.

There were good things to come out of the weekend, that's for sure. Auburn's pitching is near dominant. The Tigers allowed one run the whole time. Makayla Martin and Kaylee Carlson are doing everything needed to win games. They've only allowed three runs twice this season and never more than that.

With Auburn's normally strong offense, that should be enough for the Tigers to be undefeated. Unfortunately, the bats just haven't come alive as much as we'd like. Normal stalwart Kasey Cooper has started off the season struggling at the plate. Hopefully, that gets turned around soon. If it does, then Auburn will be nigh unbeatable.

The Tigers next game will be Thursday afternoon as they welcome Liberty to the Plains. First pitch will be 6 pm Central. Then, they'll have another weekend tournament with the Wilson/DeMarini Classic against Savannah State, Texas State, and College of Charleston
