2017 Three-Star Quarterback Malik Willis Commits to Auburn

The Tigers have added another signal caller to the class for commitment #20.

Auburn has been through a few high school quarterbacks in this class. First, it was Lowell Narcisse. He decommitted and almost committed again, but ultimately chose LSU. Then it was Tray Bishop, who many people project as a DB at the next level more than a QB, anyway. He has decommitted from Auburn, though the Tigers are still pursuing him.

The Tigers landed a QB in JUCO transfer Jarrett Stidham, but always wanted another high school QB. That high school QB is now a part of the class with the commitment of 3* Malik Willis of Roswell HS in Atlanta, GA.

Rivals was first with the story, but shortly after their publishing, Gus Malzahn gave the usual Twitter confirmation.

Willis is 6'2, 188 lbs, so he probably needs to add a little bit of weight to take the rigors of a SEC schedule, but he's got a good frame. He picked the Tigers after decommiting from Virginia Tech, recently. He also had offers from Air Force, Georgia Tech, Georgia, and others. It's obvious from his offer list that he has some running ability since a lot of running teams have offered him.

This isn't one the Tigers are going to have to try to hold on through February's signing day. He's an early enrollee, so he'll be coming in this Spring. That's huge for him to get started learning the offense and trying to compete for a spot in the future.

Highlights

There are a lot of them. 17 minutes worth, actually. There is a lot to like from his running ability. I'm not sure about his throwing motion, but he's got some arm strength. There's one throw about halfway through where he slings it a good 50+ yards. He'll need some work, but he could prove to be an electric player at the position. If he can beat out the competition, that is. Gobbler Country wasn't too high on his QB prospects when he committed to Virginia Tech back in January. That's before he exploded during his senior season, though.

The Class

Willis' commitment bumps the Tigers up one spot in the national and conference rankings to 8th and 4th. They leap Texas A&M for that spot. He's the 20th commitment in a class that has room for about 25. You can figure on the Tigers taking 6 more, though, because long snapper Bill Taylor is still listed as a commit even though he isn't likely to end up as a part of the official signing class; he'll go the Blue Shirt route.

There are still a few targets on the defensive side of the ball and Auburn may still offer (and then probably land) Willis' teammate 3* OT Jordan Tucker on the offensive side of the ball.
