KJ Britt Commits to Auburn in Halloween Video

I love Halloween. I love Auburn football. I love good football players committing to Auburn football. So when 4-star Oxford, AL linebacker KJ Britt told the world he’s going to Auburn over Georgia and Florida in a Halloween-themed video, I was pretty excited on multiple levels. This is awesome.

Ole Miss Review: Road Warriors

Auburn and Ole Miss entered their annual tilt as two teams going in two different directions. Auburn had won four straight and seemed to have righted all the wrongs from the first few games. Ole Miss had lost two in a row and was looking to avoid their fifth loss of the season. While it isn’t as matter of fact as it sounds, those trends continued.

For 3.5 quarters, the game was a shootout in every sense of the word. Chad Kelly threw the ball all over the place. Auburn ran the ball all over the place. There wasn’t a drive that I didn’t think would end in points. But I never felt like Auburn would lose the game.

auburn-mississippi-football-4

Even with Chad Kelly throwing for over 250 in the first half. Even with him breaking Archie Manning’s single game record for passing yards. I never felt like Auburn would lose the game. Why? Here’s why?

A team that relies on the pass will eventually throw a pick. That happened. A team that runs the ball controls the game. That happened, too.

In the first half, neither team punted. Ole Miss got one more possession and therefore led by one point at the half. The 2nd half was slightly more tame. Note: the blocked extra point by Montravius Adams after Ole Miss’s first touchdown made the score weird all night and it may my head hurt.

Chad Kelly wasn’t completing EVERY. SINGLE. PASS. anymore and Auburn’s run game did what it does when it’s run correctly. It wears the opponent down slowly but surely, and by the 4th quarter they are able to pull away. That’s exactly what happens every time they play an offense that can keep up with them.

That being said, I don’t think the Auburn defense gave us any reason to worry. First off, they fixed what was going on in the 1st half because the Rebels only scored seven points in the 2nd half. Second, there is no defense for a pass thrown 1.2 seconds after it’s snapped, especially on a quick slant. There just isn’t. So if they are able to complete the pass, you’re going to have to rely on a few mistakes. As I said before, if you throw a billion times, a few mistakes will be made.

And the biggest, and almost only mistake of the night, happened when Josh Holsey took a pick 45 yards in the Auburn direction. He had played maybe the game of his career and was rewarded right when it mattered most. It gave Auburn a short field and it allowed them to ice the game. By the way, Auburn won’t play another quarterback that can throw it like Chad Kelly. They just won’t.

Auburn v Mississippi

Oh, and Kamryn Pettway is awesome and I love him, but I may be able to get 5 yards a pop with the way the offensive line is playing right now. It’s amazing how the play calls seem so much better when they are given a second to happen, right? Crazy.

When all was said and done, Auburn went on the road again and dominated on the offensive side of the ball while keeping another very good offense under 30 points. Both sides did their jobs and exploited a bad defense and controlled a good offense just enough.

Auburn ended a pretty tough October with a 4-0 record. Now they get an easier than expected November with the biggest test of all at the end. But for now, I’m going to enjoy these past five weeks and the future three weeks of what should be very, very winnable games.

Malzahn, Lawson, Pettway, and Carlson Receive Recognition After Ole Miss Game

gus-malzahn-5096_rs1

Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn and three of his players received special recognition Monday after the Tigers fifth straight victory in Oxford, Mississippi.

Malzahn was selected as one of 18 coaches to be by placed on the watch list for the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year award. The award is given annually by the Bobby Dodd Foundation and the Chick-Fil-A Bowl to the coach, “with the highest ideals of leadership, scholarship and integrity on and off the field.”

The Maxwell Football Club also announced today that Defensive End Carl Lawson was named a semi-finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award which goes to the nation’s most outstanding defensive player of the year.

Lawson has been a big reason for the Tigers’ dominating defensive line this season. Even though he’s been double teamed on almost every play, the junior has had18 tackles including 9 for loss, 21 quarterback hurries, 7 1/2 sacks, and a forced fumble. The finalist and the winner of the Award will be announced on December 8, 2016 during the Home Depot College Football Award Show.

In addition, the SEC office announced today that Kamryn Pettway and Daniel Carlson were named two of the conference’s players of the week after the Tigers 40-29 victory over Ole Miss.

Pettway was named the SEC’s Offensive Player of the Week and Carlson was named the Special Teams Player of the week.

Daniel who was a national Lou Groza Award finalist last year made four field goals Saturday and his 17 of 18 goals leads the conference. Coach Malzahn has called him one of the team leaders and “the best kicker in the country.” So far, he’s lived up to that moniker.

Pettway continues to amaze in every outing. His 156.2 yards in SEC games is the league’s best and currently ranks sixth in the nation. Kamryn’s 236 yards Saturday gives him 933 yards on the year and puts him on the cusp of being another Auburn 1,000 yard rusher.

Congratulations to Coach Malzahn and these deserving Tigers!

For LSU's Orgeron, future, legacy at stake vs. No. 1 Alabama (The Associated Press)

Perhaps it's only fitting that there should be a figurative elephant in the room at LSU headquarters during Alabama week. Interim Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron shows no interest in discussing how significant Saturday night's clash with No. 1 Alabama could be for his coaching future - and legacy. The focus is about these players, the LSU family,'' Orgeron said in his distinctive, raspy, baritone voice on Monday.

Auburn vs Ole Miss: Plays and Players of the Game

What does the staff think about the outcome of Saturday night's game?

Oscar Whiskey

Play of the game: Evan Engram's untouched drop in the 4th quarter

Son of Crow

Monty Adams is the player of the game for me on defense. Holsey is 1A. Adams' blocked extra point was a huge play mentally for this team and kept Auburn with a numbers advantage in a back and forth contest. Holsey's pick covered up how bad the secondary was all night. Yeah he made a few good plays, but Ole Miss had something for Auburn on every play it seemed.

Offensively, Pettway is my player of the game. If Sean White hits one of the two deep passes he straight up missed, I would vote him here. White is so good short and intermediate, but just doesn't connect on enough deep passes to make me anything but nervous against good defenses.

I love this team. The play of the game for me was the touchdown to the tight end. I LOVED how it started in the spinning fullback formation before shifting. Makes you think Gus knows a thing or two about putting things on film for other teams.

Loved the game, love this squad, War Eagle.

Tuco

First, can we talk about the fact that the defense gave up 7 points in the second half?  Great adjustments.

Offensive player of the game is Pettway.  He's turning into something special.  The best recent comparison is probably Rudi Johnson.  I hope Gus doesn't lose sight of Kerryon Johnson (like he has a tendency to do).

Defensive player of the game is probably Adams.  Holsey fought his butt off all night and came up with that huge interception but Adams had two plays that changed the game.  First, he blocked that field goal.  Then, on fourth and 1 from inside the five he scared the center into making a bad snap, whipped the center, penetrated into the backfield, grabbed Ole Miss's huge battering ram of a backup QB, and dragged him backwards short of the first down.

Play of the game was the single wing variation with the quick shift before the pass to Jalen Harris.  I thought throwing to tight ends had been outlawed or something.  Good to see I was wrong.

Dusty

Going in a slightly different direction here. Offensive player of the game for me was Alex Kozan. On one of Kerryon's TD's Kozan blocked 3 guys on his own. He was a monster in the interior of the line giving Sean time to throw and Pettway room to run.

Holsey, for me, was DPOTG. That was his best game in what is turning into a very solid season for him. It's good to see him playing at a high level after battling injuries his entire career.

My play if the game was Gus' timeout on the goal line. Without it, OM scores on that speed sweep. After the timeout, our D got a 4th down stop and got the ball back.

Ryan Sterritt

Play of the game: gotta be the interception (ad return) by Holsey. Already up and late in the game, that basically iced it.

Players of the game:

Offensively, has to be Bubba. He broke those poor defenders souls by the end of the night. Pettway, on which weaknesses he was exploiting in the defense: "Nobody really wants to tackle me."

Defensively, Mon. After the blocked XP, he was in the center and guards' heads the rest of the night. His 4th down stop of Kelly near the endzone was HUGE.

Tons of credit again to the whole coaching staff. They offensive staff called a great game, and the defensive staff made fantastic adjustments as the game went on. Nobody expected it, but Kevin Steele is looking like the best coordinator hire in the country this year.

Bobby Barkley

OPOTG: Pettway
DPOTG: Adams
STPOTG: Stovall

Also loved how Carl Lawson sacked Chad Kelly and quietly walked back to the defense like it wasn't even a big deal.

Dr Z.

Offense:  Gotta be Bubba Pettway.  He's a big ball of hate running through the line.  He leads the conference in rushing and didn't carry the ball in two games.

Defense:  I have to give it to Monty Adams, who is the biggest disrupted of opposing offenses since Nick Fairley.  Honorable mention to Holsey for the game changing pick.

Legatron is automatic under about 55 yards.  He may be the MVP so far this season.

AU_Jonesy

Real play of the game: Holsey's interception
Hipster play of the game: White's 16-yard scramble on 3rd and 13. Extended a drive that would end in a go-ahead TD. Give an honorable mention to the staff finally calling "Fight Song"

Real offensive player of the game: Pettway. He was a monster.
Hipster offensive player of the game: Braden Smith. No one graded out higher for Pro Football Focus. He and Kozan manhandled the interior of the landshark defense.

Real defensive player of the game: Holsey. Auburn had 9 passes defended. Holsey had 5 of them. Kelly threw at Holsey 10 times. He was 2 for 10 for 34 yards and a pick.
Hipster defensive player of the game: Still Holsey. Read those PD stats again.

Jonny Dent

Offense: Pettway. He continues to get better and better as the season goes on.

Defense: Holsey. The pick was the nail in the coffin. I surprised it took as long as it did for one to happen. Had we played a little more zone earlier in the game, I think we could have gotten another and made this less of a contest.

Walt

Offensive Player of the Game is Pettway. He just keeps running for more and more yards every week and no one really wants to touch him. Honorable mention goes to Sean White, who continued to be as accurate as he's been all year, scrambled for some key gains, and is proving that he can run this offense as well as anyone.

Defensive Player of the Game is Holsey. I point to the stats that AU_Jonesy mentioned above. On a night when Chad Kelly was on fire and looked like he'd never miss, Holsey didn't let much of anything happen against him. Honorably mention to Monty Adams for destroying people on the interior.

Play of the Game is the interception. Auburn needed a turnover in a big way, and Holsey delivered. No one can throw as much as Kelly did Saturday night and not make at least one mistake. Auburn had to make sure they took advantage of the mistakes he made, and Holsey did just that.

Allen back at practice for Arkansas, ready for No. 10 Gators (The Associated Press)

A week off couldn't have come at a better time for Arkansas, both physically and mentally following a 56-3 drubbing at the hands of No. 11 Auburn two weeks ago. The Southeastern Conference grind doesn't get any easier this week for the Razorbacks (5-3, 1-3 SEC) as they prepare to host No. 10 Florida on Saturday. At least they'll have quarterback Austin Allen under center as they try to avoid losing a 10th straight game to the Gators (6-1, 4-1).

2017 Four Star Linebacker KJ Britt Commits to Auburn

The Tigers add commitment #15 to the 2017 cycle.

Auburn's 2017 linebacker class was already impressive with Tadarian Moultry and Chandler Wooten. Today, 85 got even better.

In a Bleacher Report video, 4* Linebacker KJ Britt of Oxford, AL announced his commitment to the Tigers. The primary competitors for his commitment were Georgia and Stanford.

Britt, at 6', 235 lbs, is the 15th ranked inside linebacker in the country according to the 247Sports composite. He plays, to reach back into the past and snag a nickname, like a "Little Ball of Hate." If you can call 6 feet tall "little."

This is yet another big get for linebackers coach Travis Williams on the recruiting trail. If he continues to produce like this on and off the field for the Tigers, then he will more than justify the decision to promote him to full-time staff. His future at Auburn is very bright.

The Highlights

As you can see from these highlights, Britt definitely plays hard. He epitomizes that "run through the ball carrier's soul" mentality that T-Will has wanted to instill in his players.

http://bit.ly/2f6gJ21

The Class

Britt is the 15th commitment for the Tigers' 2017 class. With this, Auburn moves up two spots to the 12th ranked class in the nation. There are still quite a few spaces left in the class, and Auburn will probably look to add at least one more linebacker in this class.

News and notes from the Auburn corners of the Internet

SOCCER

Casie Ramsier picked up a pretty big honor, being named the SEC's Scholar Athlete of the Year.

The Tigers finished the regular season strong with a win over Tennessee to tie the program's record for wins in a season. Auburn is the #2 seed in the SEC Tournament beginning this week.

SOFTBALL

The Fall Schedule closed out with a double-header that ended in predictable fashion with Auburn victories. With the fall schedule finished, the Tigers will now take a break before beginning their attempt to make it back to Oklahoma City in February.

FOOTBALL

Saturday night's game was a little more nerve-wracking than the previous two games, but it was still fun! See the immediate post-game recap and then go read the more detailed thoughts. I'm so glad I didn't have to bring up the holding calls and that ridiculous non-call intentional grounding. Of course, the Ole Miss fans are bringing up the missed holds, too, so maybe they were being fair in not calling them either way except for the obvious one on Kelly's scramble in the late 3rd quarter.

Rhett Lashlee met with the media last night and talked about the Ole Miss game. He had a lot of interesting sound bites and quotes about Pettway, Sean White, injuries, and whether Auburn really has a go-to receiver.

How did the Tigers grade out according to Pro Football Focus for the Ole Miss game? You may be surprised to know that Sean White graded out even better than Chad Kelly did. Also of note in that article is the proof of just how much Josh Holsey was by far the best DB on the field for the Tigers Saturday night.

With the victory, Auburn moved into the Top 15 in both major polls. Of course, those polls don't really matter. The poll that does matter - the College Football Playoff - will be released for the first time tomorrow night.

See Jalen Harris talk about his touchdown catch. It's about time the Tigers got the tight end involved in the game again!

What is Auburn’s Future?

pettway

Who would have dreamed back in September that when the first college football committee rankings come out tomorrow, Auburn will be sniffing the Top 10? Yet, that’s what we we’ll be watching and hoping for when the selection committee has their first say.

While the rankings are nothing more than fun at this point, Auburn has put itself in real position to grab a big boy bowl or more. Before letting our minds wander, let’s not sleep on Vanderbilt.

There’s something about the Commodores and an early kickoff that keeps me up at night. A trip the following week to Athens will have its own challenges, even if Kirby Smart is shaping up to be Will Muschamp 2.0.

But what if?

Yeah, let’s play that game. Say Auburn goes to Tuscaloosa on Nov. 26 sitting at 9-2 and pulls off the huge upset. Do they have a chance to crack the playoff? Certainly, that depends on what happens to the four remaining undefeated teams and those with one loss. But Auburn would have a strong argument.

Assuming Clemson runs the table, that six-point opening loss to the Dabos might not look so bad. Obviously, Texas A&M needs to lose for Auburn to have any hope. The Aggies have remaining conference games with Miss St., Ole Miss and LSU. So, a loss is certainly possible.

Should Auburn find itself in the SEC Championship against tenth-ranked Florida and come away with a win, would the committee look Auburn’s way. It will come down to how many undefeated teams are left and who the remaining one-loss programs are and who they’ve played.

In Auburn’s favor, would be knocking off the assumptive top-ranked team and winning 10-straight games including the SEC Championship. Would a one-loss Louisville, Ohio State or Wisconsin have a better argument than Auburn?

What about a one-loss Washington (assuming they lose)? Working against Auburn would be an Ohio St. upset over Michigan. Assuming three undefeated teams remain, Auburn would most likely lose out to the Buckeyes because of a win over the Wolverines.

Should Auburn win out and then lose at Alabama, what happens then? It would likely go back to where Texas A&M finishes. If they lose another game, and Auburn plays Alabama close, it’s possible the Tigers end up in New Orleans at the Sugar Bowl.

In other words, there’s still a lot to play for in this most unusual season.

Playing the game is fun, but totally unscientific. The bottom line is that Auburn is every bit in the race for a national title today, which is mind-blowing considering how the year started. We too know that it can all go away in four-quarters.

Auburn must get better in the defensive secondary and find a way to rest Kamryn Pettway. How the kid can continue to get this many reps down the stretch is a concern.

The sign of a good team is one that gets better every week. Some may argue that Saturday’s win at Ole Miss was not better, but I disagree.

They were tested on the road and won. That’s a huge hurdle and one that should serve them well two weeks from now in Athens.

But let’s not sleep on Vandy.

The Auburn/Ole Miss Halloween Football Game Summary

It was another exciting Auburn/Ole Miss Halloween football game. Despite the records of both teams when they do meet, you can just never predict the outcome. I can still remember that Auburn was supposed to lose this game according to the talking heads of the various sports networks at the beginning of this season. I actually made notes on this game to ease some of the stress from watching the back and forth offensive plays by both teams. I just had a feeling that Auburn and Ole Miss would give the fans 4 full quarters of college football as I waited for the game to begin on Saturday. The reports that I received indicated that the "Grove" was festive as usual prior to this game. This game is a good example of why an SEC team must have a good running and passing game to win consistently in SEC.

Here are some of my observations on this game.

1) The Ole Miss coaching staff did their homework on the Auburn defense and Chad Kelly proceeded to throw a series of short passes to combat the Auburn pass rush. The Ole Miss receivers were open for much of the first half, but Auburn made adjustments in the second half and Ole Miss only scored one touchdown. Chad Kelly ended the night with 465 passing yards. As Cole Cubelic pointed out last night, there have been 8 other notable QBs who have thrown for 400 yards when playing Auburn and lost.

2) It was obvious from the start of the game that Auburn planned to run plays with a heavy dose of running and some passing. Auburn ran a total of 74 plays(52 rushing and 22 passing) to 90 plays for Ole Miss and finished with 247 passing and 307 rushing yards.

3) Kamryn Pettway continues to impress with his running talent. He had 230 yards rushing and it was apparent that the Ole Miss defensive players wanted no part of trying to tackle him as the game progressed. Mr. Pettway now has 933 rushing yards and did not even play against Clemson or ULM. He is a third year sophomore so we will be able to see him run for another year before he plays on Sunday.

4) Kerryon Johnson rushed for 41 yards and 2 TDs and seemed to be recovering well from the ankle injury.

5) Auburn finally used the tight end when Jalen Harris caught his first career pass on a 15 yard touchdown play. He was wide open on this play and walked into the end zone after the catch. I am told that this play is called "Fight Song".

6) Sean White played a great game and seemed to be calling audibles at the line. He seems to be reading defenses well and knows where his receivers are located. He finished the game with 247 yards passing and 27 yards rushing.

7) Daniel Carlson is the best kicker that I have seen play at Auburn. He had 4 field goals and the longest kick was 47 yards. Some of you probably know that both of his parents are Alabama grads and he was not offered a scholarship by Alabama. I am just happy that he chose to play at Auburn.

8) The Josh Holsey interception with 7:21 left in the game was a turning point in this game. Auburn then proceeded to score another TD with a run by Kerryon Johnson.

9) The goal line stand in the second half was another critical defensive play. Ole Miss had the ball on Auburn's 3 yard line and they were stopped on a fourth and 1 by Devaroe Lawrence.

10) Tray Matthews led the Auburn defense with 11 tackles and Deshaun Davis had 10 tackles.

A quote from Hugh Freeze last night. "They're one of the better teams in college football." They're going to be a tough out for a lot of people."

War Eagle and enjoy the ride!

Auburn Rumbles over the Rebels! (Grading Auburn’s 40-29 win over Ole Miss.)

ole-miss-grades

A game changing pick by Joshua Holsey!
(AP Photo/Thomas Graning)

War Eagle everybody! It’s time now for the Acid Reign Report on Auburn’s 40-29 win over Ole Miss on the road. It wasn’t always a thing of beauty, but Auburn’s second trip this season to the magnolia state resulted in a double digit win, and the Tigers continue to tear through a tough SEC schedule. Some issues were exposed in the secondary, but I have to give Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly a lot of credit. Auburn will not see another arm as strong and accurate this season, unless it is in a bowl game.

While the Auburn defense was taking blow after blow from the quick-passing Ole Miss offense, the Auburn offense was relentless, and kept the Tigers in the game throughout. Ole Miss would score to take the lead, and Auburn always answered. Everyone in the building knew that Auburn’s big back Kamryn Pettway would get the ball, but Ole Miss could only hope to slow him down. Pettway piled up 236 yards on the night, and ran over Rebel hopes and dreams. When Pettway wasn’t carrying the ball, other Tigers stepped up. Quarterback Sean White masterfully spread the ball around, and was also successful scrambling for first downs when protection broke down. White actually finished with a higher grade than record-setting Chad Kelly did, on the other side!

The relentless pressure Auburn has relied on defensively in recent weeks was neutralized, for the most part, this week. The Rebels did not use many 7-step drops this game, instead opting to get the ball out quickly to a talented host of receivers. Ole Miss relied heavily on the quick slant pass, and dared Auburn to move up and make a play. When the Tigers showed any move to the inside, the Rebels would uncork a back shoulder fade on them. Kelly and the Ole Miss offense were virtually unstoppable in the first half, and led Auburn 22-20 at the half.

Auburn did show a bit more aggressiveness in coverage in the second half, but a lot of it was window dressing. The focus remained on not letting Ole Miss hit deep passes. As much as anything, I feel like Chad Kelly just cooled down a bit in the second half. Auburn’s offense had a lot to do with that. In the 4th quarter, as Auburn pulled away, Ole Miss hardly had the ball. Auburn had possession of the ball for 11 minutes and 39 seconds in the 4th quarter, and outscored the Rebels 13-0 during this period. That was the story of the ballgame.

Special teams play was crucial in keeping pace with the Ole Miss offense. Kicker Daniel Carlson hit on all 4 of his field goal attempts, and notched 6 more touchbacks. I’ve been a bit critical of punter Kevin Phillips in recent weeks, but he uncorked a 50 yard punt at a crucial time in this game. If there is an issue on special teams, it might be kick coverage. After the Tigers took a 33-29 lead midway through the 4th, the Tiger coverage gave up a 43 yard kickoff return to set Ole Miss up with good field position. Fortunately, Ole Miss dropped a sure touchdown pass, then Joshua Holsey jumped a square-in route, made a great interception, and returned it deep into Ole Miss territory. Auburn cashed the opportunity, and the game was essentially over at that point.

Unit Grades, after the jump!

Defensive Line: A. Some folks might be critical of a line that only managed a couple of sacks on a record setting Ole Miss day, but there just wasn’t much chance with Ole Miss unloading the ball quickly. The defensive line still got a few hurries, and totally throttled any Ole Miss rushing attempt. Quarterback Chad Kelly led all Ole Miss rushers with a measly 40 yards. No Ole Miss rusher averaged even 4 yards per carry.

Linebackers: A-. I thought the tigers might have had their worst tackling outing of the year. Overall, it was another good performance, but we did see several guys get away from initial contact and keep fighting for yards.

Secondary: B-. I felt like the secondary got exposed a bit, in this game. Auburn’s corners on both sides had made a name for themselves this year for swatting balls away, but with the exception of Joshua Holsey, they were unable to prevent catch after catch. Holsey is not playing enough snaps, in my opinion. In limited time, Holsey had 5 pass break ups, and a back-breaking interception. No one else in the secondary got a hand on a ball. Auburn safeties had particular difficulty staying with Ole Miss tight end Evan Engram.

Punt Returns: A. Ole Miss only punted twice. Marcus Davis managed a fair catch at the 18 that prevented a roll to the corner. Davis took another punt from the 14 out to the 24 to give the Tigers some breathing room. This was a good change for the Tigers, as the week before lots of balls hit the ground and rolled.

Kick Returns: C. Auburn had an awful return on the first Tiger possession, and a great one later on by Kerryon Johnson that gave the Tigers the ball at the 31. Ole Miss kicked touchbacks on 5 of 7 kickoffs.

Place Kicking: A+. Daniel Carlson made clutch kicks all day, and delivered 6 touchbacks on 9 kickoffs. Coverage remains a problem, on rare returns. Auburn gave up a 43 yard return late, after taking a 4 point lead in the game.

Offensive Line: A+. Auburn once again dominated up front. Ole Miss had to load the box to come up with stops, and I can’t fault the line for not getting all 8 defenders blocked. On 22 Auburn pass attempts, Ole Miss had just 1 sack and 1 quarterback hurry. The line paved the way for Auburn to rush for 307 yards on the day.

Running Backs: A+. It was the Kamryn Pettway show, once again. Every game, Pettway’s rushing totals go up, thus far. Auburn’s backs did not fumble the ball, and were spot on in pass protection.

Receivers: A. I thought receiver blocking was great, this week. With leading receiver Tony Stevens sitting this game out due to injury, other guys stepped up, like Darius Slayton, who had 3 clutch grabs. Kudos to Jalen Harris for getting his first reception, for a score. He’s been used exclusively as a blocker, for the last 2 seasons. He looked pretty smooth on that route and catch, did he not?

Quarterback: A+. White did a great job of finding the open man, and making the throw. I cringed when he took off out of the pocket on 3rd and 13, but he was able to scramble for the first down. Quarterbacks are taught not to do that on 3rd and plus 10, but White has been successful at it, thus far.

This time a year ago, Auburn was smarting from a 27-19 home loss, and wondering how to get to a bowl game. Ole Miss scored a similar amount of points this season, but the Tiger offense is leaps and bounds better, this year. The win has Auburn poised to make a run at a division crown. No one is laughing off these Tigers, now!

It’s time now for the Tigers to keep the hammer down, and plow over a trio of opponents en route to the Iron Bowl. Vanderbilt visits for an early game next weekend, then the Tigers travel to Athens to take on a struggling Georgia team. The Tigers then tune up with Alabama A&M, before heading to Tuscaloosa to take on the Tide. This bunch of Tigers could well run the table, and end up in Atlanta, the first weekend in December!

Auburn Survives Against Ole Miss 40-29

It was a record breaking night by offensive players on both sides. Auburn's defense came away with the bigger stops when they needed to.

The Tigers went into Oxford, MS tonight on a roll and hoping to keep that momentum going into the home stretch. For most of the night, that looked like it would be in question as Chad Kelly and the Ole Miss passing attack carved up the Tigers' defense for one of the worst passing defense performances the Tigers have ever had.

Here's the thing, though. With all of that, the Tigers defense held when it needed to, and it kept Ole Miss under their average for points per game and did enough for the Tigers to leave Oxford with the big SEC West win and heading into next week's Vanderbilt game with tons of momentum.

Going in, we knew Auburn was facing one of the best passing offenses in the country. Ole Miss was going to be able to move the ball well if they could get quick passes in to negate Auburn's pass rush, and they did just that. The Tigers only tallied 2 sacks against Kelly all night; one by Carl Lawson and one shared by Jeff Holland and Marlon Davidson.

Of course, the other story going into this game was Ole Miss' rush defense. They've been blistered by good rushing offenses over the last few weeks, and that did not change, tonight. Kamryn Pettway put up 236 yards on 30 carries all by himself as a part of the Tigers' 307 yards total. That puts Pettway at 933 yards for the season, and he didn't even record a carry in two of the Tigers' games.

As for the game, itself. It was a back-and-forth affair until the 4th quarter. Ole Miss struck first, but Montravius Adams blocked his second kick of the season when he got his hands on the extra point. Auburn drove down the field and pounded the ball into the end zone with a 41 yard Pettway touchdown.

The two teams traded field goals for much of the 2nd quarter, and the game went into the half with Ole Miss leading 22-20.

Both teams have struggled with the 3rd quarter lately, and this game was no exception. They did both add passing touchdowns, though. Auburn's was a very emotional one for many, as tight end Jalen Harris - a protege of former Tiger Philip Lutzenkirchen - caught the first touchdown pass by an Auburn tight end since CJ Uzomah in the 2014/15 Outback Bowl.

Ole Miss recaptured the lead just before the end of the 3rd quarter, but the Tigers' defense would stand strong in the 4th. They held Ole Miss from scoring while adding two field goals of their own before the play of the game happened with Josh Holsey intercepting Chad Kelly and returning it 47 yards. Kerryon Johnson would put the game away with a touchdown a few plays later.

It was a heart-pounding game for the Tigers in just their second road game of the year. Sean White quietly had another great game throwing 15/22 for 247 yards. He almost had Kyle Davis for a bomb of a touchdown, but threw just a half step ahead of the freshman wide receiver.

Auburn is now 6-2 heading into the Vanderbilt game next weekend. The Tigers should be favored - and should win - every game from here to the Iron Bowl, which sets things up for a crazy game in Tuscaloosa.

War Eagle, everyone!

Tigers continue to chase championship dreams, this afternoon!

War Eagle, everybody! Tonight, the Auburn Tigers will take on the Ole Miss Rebels, in Oxford. The Tigers come in riding a 4 game winning streak, and still have everything to play for. Ole Miss limps into this game, having lost to Arkansas and LSU in back to back weeks. At 1-3 in the SEC, Ole Miss title hopes are already dashed. At 3-4 overall, Ole Miss needs to win 3 of their last 5 games to even be bowl eligible. Suffice it to say that much more was expected of this team. Will we see an angry bunch this week at their place, or will they be sleepwalking?

This battle will likely be won or lost in the trenches, as is usual in most football games. Auburn is near the top of the nation rushing the football, and Ole Miss has had difficulty stopping the run. Ole Miss has a depleted, wounded offensive line, and Auburn goes 10-deep along the defensive front. On paper, it’s not difficult to predict a rout. Strange things happen in college football, though. That’s why the games aren’t played on paper. Auburn cannot afford to come in cocky, and have a poor effort.

For those attending the game, near-perfect weather is expected. Other than a couple of momentary cool snaps, summer has never really ended in the deep South. It should be around 75 degrees at kickoff, falling into the 60s by the end of the game. No rain is expected. This game will kick off at 6:15 PM Central time, and it will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

As always, feel free to join in and enjoy this thread. I’ll be absent this week, as duty calls at work. I may also be late afternoon tomorrow before posting grades. War Eagle, and let’s take care of business in Oxford!

How to Watch Auburn vs Ole Miss Live Online, Time, TV Schedule, and More

All the information you need for tonight's game.

The Tigers take on the Rebels, tonight. There are all sorts of statistical and historical reasons to believe Auburn will win this one. There are also practical reasons like the strength of the Tigers in the trenches and Ole Miss' run defense. However, Ole Miss has been a much better team at home, so there's plenty of reason not to feel like Auburn is going to win this one going away.

That being said, things do look good for Auburn.

When The Tigers Have The Ball

Ole Miss' defensive backs are talented, but a few of them were forced into duty before they were really ready due to injuries. It's possible Auburn could attempt to throw the football in this one to take advantage of that.

But, then, you have Ole Miss' defense being statistically worse than Arkansas' against the run and Auburn will have Kerryon Johnson back on top of Bubba Pettway. Auburn is going to run the ball. A lot.

When Ole Miss Has The Ball

The Rebels don't have much of a ground game outside of Chad Kelly himself, so the Tigers could start out with their ears pinned back and intending to rush the quarterback heavily. They can't discount Kelly's passing talent and the corps of talented pass-catchers he has to throw to.

Ole Miss' offensive line is a bit banged up, and they may start a backup tackle against Carl Lawson, which... yeeeeah, that doesn't bode well for them. Then again, maybe that backup will turn out to be a real game-time performer. Still, I think Auburn is going to go after Kelly hard and attempt to ensure he never has time to get into any rhythm. The DBs are going to have to be very good against the deep ball and the linebackers will have to particularly mark Evan Engram, one of the best tight ends in the nation.

College Football TV Broadcast Schedule For Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016

635818965188500112-20151031-gma-gr1-033

The Auburn Tigers put on a textbook demonstration of a complete football game in last Saturday’s 56-3 win over Arkansas. The Tigers set a school record with 543 yards rushing and no negative plays as Sean White threw for one touchdown and ran for another. Four different runners accounted for six more.

On the other side of the ball, the defense was on fire, constantly sacking, hurrying, and harassing Austin Allen, the SEC’s top passer. The D also held the league’s leading rusher, Rawleigh Williams III, to just 22 yards.

The Orange and Blue is gaining momentum at just the right time. Question is, “Can the win propel the Tigers to their fourth SEC victory in a road game at Ole Miss Saturday?”

The Tigers and Rebs kick it off  at 6 p.m. CT on the SEC Network. For your TV viewing guide, we have listed below the rest of Saturday’s broadcast schedule for all of the college games.

The AUperations Order, FRAGORD 8: Ole Miss Rebels

Our military operations order style preview series continues

AUperations Order: 2016 Football Season.

FRAGORD 1, Clemson.

FRAGORD 2, Arkansas State.

FRAGORD 3, Texas A&M Aggies.

FRAGORD 4, LSU Tigers

FRAGORD 5, Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

FRAGORD 6, Mississippi State Bulldogs

FRAGORD 7, Arkansas Razorbacks

UPDATE: In order to try to make these more enjoyable, all changes from previous versions are in bold. Maybe you'll see parts I've changed every week recently that you didn't noticed I'd changed.

FRAGORD 7, Arkansas Razorbacks

Task Organization: The Auburn Tigers will be organized using this week's depth chart.

1) SITUATION

a) Enemy -

Intelligence reports indicate that the Auburn Tigers' opponent for Week 6 is a Southeastern Conference team led by a one of the best passing quarterbacks and receiving corps in the conference. Their season to date has been Jekyll and Hyde with blowing big leagues, poor road performances, and impressive home performances. The enemy will attempt to shut down Auburn's offensive attack on the ground with what is an even weaker statistical rushing defense than Arkansas' and force the Tigers to win with Sean White throwing the football. Their running game has largely been non-existent and they rely largely on their very talented QB, WRs, and TE. They will likely attempt to target linebackers in coverage and beat the Tigers in a shootout.

b) Friendly -

(1) Higher Unit Mission Two Levels Up: No Change

(2) Higher Unit Mission One Level Up: No Change

c) Civil Considerations:

The local populace will be hostile to the Auburn Tigers. This will be an evening game against an SEC opponent on the road, and will likely feature a very loud and boisterous crowd attempting to negatively effect the Auburn offense.

d) Attachments & Detachments:

Attachments: Auburn University Marching Band, Auburn Cheerleaders, Aubie the Tiger.

Detachments: None

2) MISSION

The Auburn Tigers Football Team take on the Ole Miss Rebels at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi at 1615 hours local time, in order to advance the program's goal of reaching the SEC Championship and College Football Post Season.

3) EXECUTION

a) Concept of the Operation.

The football team will play four quarters of fast, physical football against all opponents with each portion of the team performing special duties  assigned to them.

Scheme of Maneuver.

The operation will consist of multiple phases. Phase 1- the planning and preparation phase - begins at the end of the Mississippi State game and ends with the team departing for the Remain Over Night (RON) site. Phase 2 - the travel phase - begins upon arrival at the RON site and ends with Tiger Walk. Phase 3 - the execution phase - begins upon arrival at the stadium and consists of pre-game warm-ups and game activity. It will end upon completion of the contest. Phase 4 - the recovery phase - begins with post-game locker-room activities and ends upon the team's arrival back at the athletic facility in Auburn.

Offense, the main effort, will conduct fast-paced, minimal communication attacks against the enemy utilizing multiple air and land-based weapons systems. Sean White will lead the unit on the field with quick, accurate passes (if necessary), good reads of the defense on read-option plays, and effective driving of a fast-paced tempoAuburn is coming off a record-setting rushing performance against the Arkansas defense and now faces a defense that is - statistically - even worse. However, this game will be on the road, and that will likely help motivate and make up for some of the defensive issues. Auburn will likely rely primarily on the ground game with a few deep balls and other pass plays utilized in order to keep the defense honest. At least 1-2 deep shots should be taken per quarter to back the defense off the line. Through speed of maneuver, simplicity in planning, and security of ball-control, the offense will attack the defense and cross the opponent's goal line as quickly and as often as possible.

Defense, a supporting effort, will employ fast/physical assaults on the opponent's offense. Ole Miss is led by one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC in Chad Kelly. In addition, they also have one of the best tight ends in Evan Engram and one of the best WR corps, as well. Auburn will need to focus on attacking the weak Ole Miss offensive line, pressuring Chad Kelly and forcing errant throws that allow the defensive backs to make plays on the ball while also maintaining containment on Kelly's ability to run the football. If given time, Kelly can pick apart the best of defenses on the ground and through the air. Ole Miss does not have a great rushing attack, and making sure that they remain one dimensional is key to Auburn's success on defense.Through surprise, mass, and economy of force, the defense will prevent the opposing offense from crossing the Auburn goal line through expending of their downs or through creating turnovers.

Special Teams, a supporting effort, will conduct all kicking and return duties. #Legatron will hopefully not be needed for short field goals and is available for trick plays. Through maneuver, simplicity, mass, and economy of force, special teams will attempt to score points when supporting the offensive efforts and prevent opponents from scoring points while supporting defensive efforts.

Fans, a supporting effort, will conduct themselves in a manner befitting proper sportsmanship standards while still loudly cheering on the Auburn Tigers football team and disrupting the opponents' game plan, rhythms, snap counts, etc.

b) Task to Subordinate Units

(1) Offense. Task: No Change. Purpose: No Change.

(2) Defense. Task: No Change. Purpose: No Change.

(3) Special Teams. Task: No Change. Purpose: No Change.

c) Coordinating Instructions

(1) Priority Intelligence Requirements (PIR): Opposing team signals, tendencies, etc. Only to be obtained through ethical, legal means.

(2) Timeline

Times will be adjusted based on subsequent operations.

Ole Miss Preview: Reeling Rebels

ole-miss-logoFollowing a 56-3 throttling of the Arkansas Razorbacks inside the friendly confines of Jordan-Hare Stadium, the 5-2 Auburn Tigers must now travel to Mississippi for the 2nd time in as many road games this season. This time they will be taking on the Rebels from Oxford. You’ll remember that the Tigers beat the Bulldogs from Starkville 38-14 in their place earlier this month.

The Ole Miss Rebels aren’t having the season they expected. Why everyone expected them to have a season that was remotely close to the season they had last year after losing their top receiver, top offensive lineman, and multiple defensive studs, I will never know. Chad $wag Kelly didn’t do it all by himself, and it’s showing this season.

They have no running game… at all, and they can’t stop the running game… at all. It sounds like Arkansas minus the ability to run. Given that Arkansas beat the Razorbacks just two weeks ago, it makes sense. Given that Auburn just beat Arkansas by 53, it sounds like a beatdown is coming.

Probably not. Why? Here’s why.

Of those two victories I just mentioned in the round robin of Auburn, Ole Miss, and Arkansas, both came at home. As I mentioned earlier, Auburn travels to Ole Miss. They will playing in a well lit and and well “lit” opponent’s stadium under the cover of night.

Besides, the blowout can be used to show the progress of Auburn’s entire team since the beginning of the season, but it can’t be expected multiple times a season. Blowouts like that are special. If Auburn played Arkansas today, they wouldn’t win by 53. They’d win, but they wouldn’t win that big. A lot worked in their favor, and complete domination like that just isn’t normally repeatable on a game-by-game basis.

On top of playing at home, and despite the lack of a running game, the Rebel offense ain’t half bad. They built pretty large leads on Alabama and Florida State before their defense collapsed (also aided by turnovers from the Rebel offense). They scored 43 on Alabama, 35 on Florida State, and 45 on Georgia.

However, their scoring has been on a slight decline over the last three weeks: 45 against Memphis, 30 at Arkansas, 21 at LSU. It’s a good sign for Auburn’s defense.

Also a good sign for this Auburn team traveling on their toughest road game so far is the fact that Ole Miss is now with 4 losses. Their playoff dreams were dashed long ago. Their SEC dreams are probably almost mathematically impossible. They are in the middle of a downward spiral and will be up against one of the most improved and upward-trending teams in the nation.

It’s pretty simple: Auburn needs to run the ball as they have been and as they should easily be able to do, and stop Chad Kelly. It sounds exactly like the recipe they used against Austin Allen and Arkansas last week. They can’t run, so tee off on the quarterback, and score at least every two times you have the ball.

If Auburn can just keep the home crowd out of it, and 4 losses in the back of their minds should help with that, the Tigers should get away with a win.

They will get away with a win. Kerryon returns and plays the perfect complement to the new star back in Pettway. The defense does give up a deep ball or two, but it won’t be enough. Auburn continues their rise as Ole Miss continues their slide.

Auburn 38, Ole Miss 23
