Big Ten touts plan for tougher schedules as playoff push (The Associated Press)

The College Football Playoff has turned strength of schedule into a constant talking point, with each conference claiming its road to the postseason is most daunting. Hoping to set themselves apart when playoff selection time comes around, Big Ten teams plan to play at least one nonconference game against a Power Five opponent and eliminate FCS schools from their schedules starting in 2016 when the league goes to a nine-game conference slate. Commissioner Jim Delany touted the league's ''1910'' scheduling model on Friday at Big Ten media days: one Power Five nonconference game, nine conference games, one conference championship game, zero games outside Bowl Subdivision.

Auburn Football: Biggest Storylines Heading into Fall Camp

This summer on the Plains, the only things hotter than the sky-high temperatures have been the takes on where Auburn's football team will finish in 2015.

Some experts pencil Auburn as a potential national title contender. Others have the Tigers finishing with another middle-of-the-road season.

But the time for talking is about to be over, because fall camp is right around the corner.

Auburn will open fall camp August 4 with eyes on September's season opener against Louisville in the Georgia Dome.

This 2015 Auburn team has plenty of talent and potential, but it will also have its fair share of question marks when it returns to the practice field next week.

Here are three major storylines to watch as Gus Malzahn's Tigers head into fall camp.

Wanted: More than one go-to receiver

Auburn's offense might be inexperienced, but Malzahn and his staff have a lot to work with this fall. Jeremy Johnson is getting legitimate Heisman buzz at quarterback. The running back room will be led by two former 5-star recruits, Roc Thomas and Peyton Barber, and the offensive line has three players with starting experience.

That leaves the wide receivers—a position where the Tigers have their most established offensive starand not much else in terms of consistency.

D'haquille "Duke" Williams had 24 more catches last season than the second-best returning receiver, former Georgia game hero Ricardo Louis. The reception counts drop down to 13 with Marcus Davis and then bottom out into single digits.

Auburn has plenty of players behind Williams, and they will need for them to step up this fall.

Sammie Coates was a deep-ball specialist, shaky hands and all, with speed to stretch defenses past their breaking points. Louis has the potential to be his replacement, along with Tony Stevens.

"I've been progressing as a receiver, getting better and learning," Louis said in January, according to Ryan Black of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. "I've been learning from Duke as well. Next year, we're going to be 'them guys.' We're going to be those guys the quarterback looks to."

Davis' steady hands make him a top contender for a starting job, while Melvin Ray and Stanton Truitt have shown flashes of big-play potential in the past. Myron Burton Jr., Darius Slayton and Ryan Davis haven't had much of a chance to prove themselves.

Now that Auburn has a stronger presence in the pocket with Johnson, the team needs to see improvement from its receiving corps outside of Williams.

Fall camp will be a great chance for a receiver or two to step up and earn some major playing time.

How will the freshmen fit in?

Auburn had several top recruits from the class of 2015 enroll early, most notably the JUCO trio of Jovon Robinson, Jason Smith and Maurice Swain.

But fall camp will be the first chance for the rest of Auburn's newcomers to hit the practice field.

The 5-star defensive end Byron Cowart headlines this list, and there's a real chance he could carve out a major role in a defense that struggled in the trenches for most of the 2014 season.

"At worst, Cowart will start the season as a situational pass-rusher. At best, he wins a starting job immediately," James Crepea of AL.com wrote. "The only thing slowing Cowart from seeing the field instantly would be a subpar fall camp or if easing him into the action is part of Will Muschamp's grand plan for managing the hype that surrounds the heralded defensive end."

Another top freshman to watch is 4-star running back Kerryon Johnson. The electrifying former Mr. Football winner could break into the backfield like Thomas did last season or find a way to contribute as a return man.

"I really feel like he will factor," Malzahn told Phillip Marshall of AuburnUndercover. "He’s a guy we expect to play. He has a unique skill set and can do a lot of different things. He can do a lot of things with the ball in his hands."

Other names to watch during fall camp will be defensive pickups Jeff Holland, Darrell Williams and Jordan Colbert. The young players will get their first major opportunities to impress Muschamp and the rest of the staff as Auburn rebuilds its defense in 2015.

Cornerback depth

A special group of newcomers will have even bigger pressure to perform in 2015—the cornerbacks.

Auburn signed the trio of Carlton Davis, Javarius Davis and Jeremiah Dinson in February. While they lack the name recognition of a Cowart or Holland, these freshmen will play big roles in a thin position group.

"We’re going to depend on some freshmen. We’re going to need a few guys to step up and play the way we need them," senior cornerback Jonathan Jones told Ryan Black of AuburnUndercover. "I think the older guys are going to get them ready and once we get to fall camp and we get the chance to be out there with the coaches, the younger guys who are going to need to help us are going to be ready to work."

The Tigers lost cornerbacks Kamryn Melton, Joe Turner and Kalvaraz Bessent to transfers this offseason. Spring injuries to backups such as T.J. Davis forced the staff to start walk-ons at cornerback for the A-Day Game.

With Josh Holsey transitioning to nickel back in Muschamp's system, Auburn needs bodies at cornerback behind Jones and Michigan transfer Blake Countess.

"That was part of the deal in the recruiting process," defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson told Black. "Right now we just lack numbers. ... We're going to need some guys that can finish down the field."

Auburn's pass defense has ranked 12th or worse in the SEC in four of the last five seasons. Last year, the Tigers ranked 91st nationally in allowing pass plays of 20 yards or more.

As Bleacher Report's Barrett Sallee has said multiple times this offseason, Auburn doesn't need great defense in order to compete for championships.

Malzahn's offense makes it so that the Tigers need "just enough" defense, and they'll have to rely on some brand-new players in order to cross that threshold this season.

Lowell Narcisse to Auburn: Tigers Land 4-Star QB Prospect

Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn certainly knows how to use dual-threat quarterbacks, as evidenced by Cam Newton's and Nick Marshall's success under his tutelage. On Monday, Lowell Narcisse potentially made himself the next in line.

The 4-star QB committed to the Tigers, per Shea Dixon of 247Sports:

According to 247Sports' composite rankings, Narcisse is the No. 3 dual-threat passer in the 2017 recruiting class. He's also No. 59 overall and the third-best recruit in Louisiana.

During his freshman and sophomore years, he threw for 5,137 yards, 58 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. He has also run for 2,039 yards and 30 touchdowns, per MaxPreps. Narcisse will miss his junior season after tearing his ACL in May.

His rushing yards are a testament to his athletic ability. There's no question Narcisse is a dynamic addition to Auburn's class.

However, he'll definitely need to improve as a passer down the road. He completed just 55.1 percent of his passes in his first two years in high school.

His mechanics are a bit of an issue. The following Vine from Cody Bellaire highlights how Narcisse's arm can drop a bit prior to release:

Bleacher Report's Damon Sayles showed how he can excel throwing on the run, however:

The things Narcisse must improve aren't vastly different from a typical dual-threat QB. And some level of accuracy can be sacrificed for mobility.

With Malzahn showing him the ropes, Narcisse could blossom into a star at the next level.

Obstacles That Could Prevent Auburn from Winning the SEC Championship

The buzz surrounding the Auburn Tigers reached a fever pitch earlier this month at SEC media days in Hoover, Alabama, when more than 1,000 media members picked head coach Gus Malzahn's crew as the favorites to win the SEC championship in 2015.

The Tigers have one of the best wide receivers in the country in D'haquille "Duke" Williams, a veteran linebacking corps led by Kris Frost and Cassanova McKinzy, an experienced offensive line with Shon Coleman, Avery Young and Alex Kozan, and a potential star corner in Jonathan Jones.

On top of that, the arrival of defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and return of defensive end Carl Lawson from an ACL tear should stabilize a defense that's in desperate need of stability.

What could derail the Tigers' train to the title?

Here are a few things to keep an eye on.

Depth in the Trenches

Auburn's biggest problem last year was the inability to find a consistent pass rush. The Tigers managed just 21 sacks on the season—11th in the SEC and 94th nationally.

Simply put, Lawson's season-long absence eliminated Plan A, and former defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson didn't have a Plan B.

"That was our Achilles' heel on defense," Malzahn said at his Tiger Trek event in Atlanta in May. "When you can’t put pressure on the quarterback, it makes it tough on everybody."

The combination of Lawson's return and Muschamp's presence should help. Lawson is as much of a Dante Fowler Jr. clone as anybody on Auburn's roster, and he should thrive in the "Buck" position that is featured so prominently in Muschamp's defense.

Lawson's success or failure will help 6'4", 296-pound tackle Montravius Adams, who, as Jack Farrell of Pro Football Focus noted, was Auburn's lone bright spot in the pass rush last year:

Somebody else has to step up, though.

Senior DaVonte Lambert and junior Gimel President gained valuable experience last year, tackle Dontavius Russell is a redshirt freshman whom the coaching staff is high on, and blue-chip freshman Byron Cowart has everything it takes to be a true three-down defensive end from day one.

What if that talent and depth don't come together, though? It could be what costs Auburn a shot at the SEC title and College Football Playoff for the second straight season.

Jeremy Johnson Doesn't Live Up to the Hype

For a guy who has two career starts under his belt, junior quarterback Jeremy Johnson is getting plenty of Heisman hype. From trophy buzz (which I attempted to explain in this story) to second-team All-SEC honors at media days, the hype train is going full speed.

His head coach isn't doing much to slow it down, either.

"I'm very excited about Jeremy," Malzahn said at SEC media days. "Even in high school—I started recruiting him in ninth grade, and he ran a very similar offense. The fact this will be his third year in our system, even though he's the backup, he got a lot of reps with the ones in practice."

What if it doesn't work out, though?

If Johnson isn't the difference-maker that he's expected to be, Auburn will either have to adjust its scheme and place even more emphasis on the running game (which worked for Malzahn over the last two seasons) or turn to redshirt freshman and 2013 Elite 11 MVP Sean White.

Both scenarios could work, but in the SEC West, adjusting on the fly doesn't seem like a championship-level proposition.

The Tigers will flourish or flop on the success or failure of Johnson. While many, including yours truly, think he'll be a star, he still is one of the biggest mysteries in the SEC.

No Deep Threat Emerges

Williams was an absolute monster last year when he caught 45 passes for 730 yards and five touchdowns playing alongside bona fide deep threat Sammie Coates.

Williams probably can be a superstar without a big-time deep threat playing alongside of him, but it's better for Auburn if he doesn't find out.

Ricardo Louis seems like he's been on The Plains for a decade, and the 6'2", 215-pound speedster of "Miracle on the Plains" fame has track star speed and is stronger than most think. Melvin Ray, Marcus Davis and Tony Stevens all have potential as well.

In an ideal situation for Auburn, one would step up and become a deep threat to complement Williams. It seems like Johnson already has a good idea of who's going to play Robin to Williams' role as Batman.

"Melvin Ray and Ricardo Louis are both seniors, and have a very good chance of playing at the next level," Johnson said. "We're looking forward to them making a lot of plays."

This isn't 2013, when Coates was really the only wide receiver who threatened defenses as Auburn rolled to the SEC title. While Johnson can run much better than he's shown over the last two seasons, he's no Nick Marshall. The offense will be much more balanced in 2015, and to click at the highest possible level, a new deep threat has to emerge.
