With Clint Myers, Auburn Softball’s Future is Even Brighter Than Its Present
The 2012-2013 athletic calendar was not friendly to Auburn University. A football program that hoisted the crystal football just two years earlier plummeted to a winless SEC season. The basketball program was in the midst of the mediocre (to be kind) Tony Barbee era. The baseball team, like its football and basketball counterparts, finished last […]

Auburn Football: Who Will Emerge as Tigers' No. 2 WR Behind Duke Williams?
At this point last year, Auburn was looking for Sammie Coates' sidekick.
Coates was coming off a 2013 season in which he finished third nationally in yards per catch. But the Tigers' top vertical threat looked like their only threat toward the end of the year, and Auburn was on the hunt for that X-factor at No. 2 on the depth chart.
Fast-forward to today, when Duke Williams not only became Coates' tag team partner out wide last season, but he also surpassed Coates as the player with the most catches on the whole team.
Now the tables have turned. Who is going to be the No. 2 behind Williams, who made the surprising decision to come back to Auburn for one more year?
"We need guys to fill in and complement [Williams], take some pressure off him going into the season where people can't key on him," wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig told the Montgomery Advertiser's James Crepea. "We have a quarterback now that's more of a passer than a runner, and we're going to be able to stretch the field a little bit more."
Unlike last offseason, Auburn doesn't have a 5-star wide receiver recruit like Williams coming in to become an instant impact in Gus Malzahn's offense.
But what the Tigers do have are several experienced players and a few targets looking to make their moves up the depth chart this offseason.
Here's a look at what all of them could bring to Auburn's passing attack in 2015.
Marcus Davis
A former high school quarterback, Davis was a surprise contributor in his true freshman season of 2013. He finished third on the team with 23 catches for 217 yards, including an incredible grab in the Tigers' important road upset of Texas A&M.
But with Williams, Coates and senior Quan Bray getting the vast majority of targets from Nick Marshall in 2014, Davis' production slipped to 13 catches for 92 yards.
Davis was a slot receiver his first two seasons at Auburn, but more opportunities could emerge for him on the outside, where he practiced this spring.
"He's a great route-runner, he understands how to get open," Craig told Crepea. "He understands how to beat press man, doesn't have the top-end speed that you would love, but he has great speed and tremendous quickness."
Davis also has some of the most reliable hands on the team and the versatility to play different positions across Auburn's offense. While the 5'9", 180-pounder is far from the size of a Williams (6'2", 224 lbs), he has a well-rounded skill set that could lead to big plays this fall.
Ricardo Louis
When it comes to being the pure vertical threat in place of Coates, Louis is the ideal candidate to become a top-two receiver for the Tigers this year.
After all, Louis is already the face of the most famous deep ball in Auburn history:
Even though Louis is one of the fastest players on the roster, he wasn't called upon to stretch the field as much in 2014. Expect that to change this season, because the Miami native says he is ready to do what Coates did at Auburn.
"As the deep man, the big-play ability? Yeah. I'll be that," Louis said earlier this year, according to AL.com. "With me, Duke and Jeremy coming back, we have a good relationship now, but moving on to next season, it's going to be even better."
Louis has the frame (6'2", 215 lbs) and the physical gifts to be Coates' replacement. If he can become a consistent weapon in both catches and his targets, Louis could have a monster senior season on the Plains.
Melvin Ray
Good things happen for Auburn when Ray gets the ball.
The former minor league baseball player has recorded catches in only nine games these last two seasons, and he's recorded double digits in yardage in all but one of them. Auburn fans remember him most for his surprise touchdown grab against Florida State in the BCS National Championship Game and his 49-yard score in last season's opening win over Arkansas.
At 6'3" and 215 pounds, Ray is another ideal red-zone threat with Williams. Last offseason, Ray's teammates called him a leader at the position.
"He’s got a big body, and he knows how to put his body in front of you and place the ball," former Auburn receiver and cornerback Trovon Reed said. "He’s just a guy waiting on his turn, waiting on his breakout time. He’s going to shock the world."
Ray's breakout time hasn't happened yet, but it could come this season as Auburn looks for answers at wideout.
Tony Stevens
Like Davis, Stevens was another sophomore whose numbers slid last season.
But there's plenty of optimism surrounding Stevens, who has the impressive speed and size—he stands at 6'4"—to replace Coates.
His biggest problem, according to Craig, is his consistency.
"Tony's a kid that had the physical ability to be a great player, be an NFL player, just have to be consistent on every play," Craig told Crepea. "Tony can come out and look like a first-round pick on one snap, and the next, he looks like he's an undrafted free agent. I've never really coached a kid with that big of a dip."
Perhaps an opening on the depth chart and a change at quarterback will get Stevens more established in Auburn's offense because, on paper, he looks like a potential star.
The Best of the Rest
Stanton Truitt returns as the only other receiver on Auburn's roster who recorded a catch in 2014. Truitt had two receptions for 13 yards before suffering a season-ending injury midway through the schedule. While he's undersized, Truitt is a speed demon at slot receiver who could receive major minutes this season.
Elsewhere, redshirt freshman Myron Burton Jr. received high praise from his coaches and teammates for his attitude in spring practices. He had a huge performance at Auburn's A-Day Game in April, recording seven catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.
In terms of new blood, 4-star signee Darius Slayton could challenge for early playing time in his Auburn career. The quick Georgia native was the No. 15 receiver in the country for the class of 2015 and flipped his commitment to the Tigers right before national signing day.
JUCO star Jason Smith competed at quarterback at the start of the spring for the Tigers but was quickly moved to wide receiver, where the coaches hope they can use his raw athleticism.
"You have to worry about a lot of stuff at quarterback," Smith told AL.com's Brandon Marcello. "I didn't see anything wrong with moving to receiver at all. I think I will help the team at that way."

Auburn Football Recruiting: Complete Preview for Big Cat Weekend
While the spring camp circuit is nearing a close, prospects will still be traveling to colleges across the country for camps and recruiting visits heading into the summer.
One of the first big events to take place will be in Auburn this weekend, where the Tigers will be having their annual Big Cat Weekend.
Auburn currently has six commitments in its 2016 class—which carries a modest ranking of No. 32 nationally.
But this weekend could set the foundation of what could eventually become a top-10 class by next February.
So who are some of the primary targets that will be on the Plains this weekend and which faces are ones that coach Gus Malzahn and his staff will need to make a positive impression on during the event?
Let's take a look at those things and more in this preview of Auburn's huge recruiting weekend.
Star Power
Between the 2016 and 2017 classes, as many as five 5-star prospects are scheduled to be in attendance this weekend, according to Keith Niebuhr of 247Sports.
The 2016 contingent includes all six of the Tigers' current commits plus former Tigers commit and 5-star receiver Nate Craig-Myers and 5-star Georgia defensive tackles Derrick Brown and Julian Rochester.
The event will also have a good dose of Georgia flavor to it as Peach State studs such as 4-star quarterback Jawon Pass, 4-star running back Elijah Holyfield, 4-star defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson and 4-star linebacker Tre Lamar will make the trek just over the state border.
Auburn is comfortably in the lead group of schools for each of these prospects.
Among the noted 2017 visitors to keep an eye on include a pair of out-of-state studs who currently rank among the nation's top 10 juniors overall in offensive tackle Calvin Ashley and corner Deangelo Gibbs.
It's clear that Malzahn and his staff will have a group of prospects from which they hope the bulk of their 2016 and 2017 classes are built.
Potential Commits
This weekend could also prove fruitful for the Tigers in the form of potential commitments.
At the top of the list of players close to joining the Tigers class is 4-star Florida receiver Eli Stove.
Niebuhr notes that Auburn's staff is optimistic that Stove could potentially commit during this weekend's festivities.
Another huge visitor, literally and figuratively, is 4-star JUCO offensive lineman Garett Bolles.
The 6'5" 290-pounder backed off a commitment to BYU earlier this month, and his trip to the Plains this weekend will be an official visit, as noted by Niebuhr.
The fact that he will make the cross-country trek for a pivotal event on Auburn's recruiting calendar is a clear signal of his interest in the Tigers program. Malzahn and his staff would love to earn a pledge from him before he heads home.
Guys Auburn Needs to Impress
Given the amount of talent that will be on hand, Auburn is hoping to make a strong impression on a few recruits who may be on the fence with regard to the Tigers or may be leaning elsewhere.
It's no secret that the Tigers have a huge need at defensive tackle, and getting talents such as Brown, Jackson and Rochester on campus is a big deal.
However, Georgia appears to be in the driver's seat for Brown and Rochester, and the Bulldogs are also a major player for Jackson.
According to Kipp Adams of 247Sports (via Niebuhr), Brown will arrive a day early to "meet with coaches and tour the facilities." Brown has consistently had the Tigers as No. 2 for his services behind Georgia, but perhaps this weekend could be their best chance to cut into Georgia's lead.
Jackson, who is already very familiar with Auburn's campus having visited multiple times in the last two years, is another priority recruit. While it's unlikely Auburn can show him anything he hasn't already seen, simply getting him back on campus will be a positive step in helping the program regain momentum in his recruitment.
Another player Malzahn would like to impress is Pass, who is the nation's top remaining quarterback who has yet to commit. According to Ryan Bartow of 247Sports, Alabama and North Carolina appear to be trending for the 6'5" 220-pounder.
Pass presents an intriguing fit in Malzahn's system and could be the Tigers' potential quarterback of the future should he elect to cast his lot with the Tigers.
While signing day is still more than eight months away, this weekend is a critical one for Malzahn and his staff in their quest to land another class that rates among the nation's best.

Auburn Football: Early Grades for 2016 Recruiting Class
After bringing Will Muschamp back to the Plains as the new defensive coordinator and securing the nation's ninth-best class of 2015 this winter, it's safe to say Auburn is off to a slow start in the final stretch of the offseason.
Right now, Auburn only has six commitments in the Class of 2016—one 4-star and five 3-star players.
The Tigers' current class—which is of course subject to major change—is currently ranked No. 32 in the nation and No. 10 in the SEC. Only Arkansas, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Missouri trail Auburn in the conference recruiting standings.
Auburn's early 2016 ranking took a good-sized hit when Nate Craig-Myers, the No. 1 wide receiver in the country, decommitted from the Tigers after 10 months.
At this point last year, Auburn was coming off a season that finished at the national championship game and already saw nine commitments for 2015—one 5-star (No. 1 overall JUCO player and former 2012 signee Jovon Robinson) and seven 4-stars.
However, the Tigers' slow start to the 2016 class shouldn't discount the potential impacts of those who are currently committed to playing on the Plains.
Let's hand out some early grades for the current pack of future Tigers.
Offense
The lone offensive commitment for Auburn on the offensive side of the ball right now is Landon Rice, who made his initial pledge way back in November 2013.
While his ratings might not leap off the screen for most fans, the Tigers definitely need Rice to stay on board for the future.
Auburn doesn't have a lot of depth at the tight end and H-back spots—and, as C.J. Uzomah and the late Philip Lutzenkirchen showed during their times on campus, Gus Malzahn can always use a standout target at those positions.
At 6'5" and 250 pounds, Rice has the look of a big-time weapon down the road in Malzahn's offensive system and has garnered a lot of attention from other schools since his commitment to Auburn. Georgia, Florida and Michigan have all offered scholarships to the tight end.
Rice's brother is currently a walk-on at Auburn, and it doesn't look like he is going to waver from his commitment to the Tigers. While Auburn has a lot of work left to do in recruiting offensive players in this class, Rice is a great fit and could be a difference-maker in the future.
Grade: Incomplete
Defense
The rest of Auburn's 2016 commitments can be found on the defensive side of the ball, where the Tigers are continuing to look for value and depth for the future.
The star of the class so far is John Broussard, the nation's No. 8 cornerback. Broussard, who hails from nearby Phenix City, Alabama, chose Auburn over LSU and Mississippi State earlier this month.
"Broussard looks comfortable playing receivers at the line of scrimmage or 10 yards off," Auburn Undercover's Keith Niebuhr said. "Another thing you have to like is the fact he isn’t afraid of contact and does well against the run. Although he only had one interception in 2014, you see Broussard make plays time after time on the ball."
With the Tigers struggling to maintain depth at cornerback, especially after a recent streak of transfers, getting Broussard and keeping him is vital for Auburn in this recruiting cycle.
Another key name for 2016 is a familiar one for many Auburn fans: Stephen Davis Jr., whose father was a star running back for the Tigers from 1993-1995.
Bleacher Report's Michael Felder likes what he sees out of Davis, who could be the perfect safety for Muschamp's defensive scheme:
Davis Jr. told reporters earlier this month he is only "70 percent" committed to Auburn, as he also has offers from Clemson, Florida, Notre Dame and South Carolina. Because of his game and his name, Davis is a player the Tigers must keep in their class.
David Marshall and Quinnen Williams are defensive line prospects who already have the size that assistant Rodney Garner loves to see. Tre Threat is another top product from the Mobile, Alabama, area who boasts the best name and one of the best offer sheets of any current commitment.
Auburn is currently targeting 10 blue-chip defensive prospects—including six 5-star players—and several of them will be on campus this weekend for the annual "Big Cat Weekend" event.
While the Tigers' current defensive commitments won't blow away any stargazing fans, they represent a solid base for what could be another top-10 class.
After all, there is still plenty of time for Auburn to improve its grades before those final report cards come out in February.
Grade: C
